Route at a glance

The lower section offers a gradual start before woodland gives way to more open terrain. Along the way, wooded lower slopes, mountain meadows and rocky ground are revealed one section at a time. Named places along the way include Karakol Gorge, Terskei-Ala-Too and Krugovoy through Terskey-Ala-Too. Together they give the walk a clear sequence and make the area easier to remember.

Getting there

Without a car

Travel from Bishkek to Karakol by coach or minibus. Continue by local bus, taxi or four-wheel-drive transfer to Ak-Suu, Jeti-Ögüz or the relevant gorge entrance near the trailhead.

By car

Drive from Bishkek via Balykchy and around Lake Issyk-Kul to Karakol, then use local roads to the chosen gorge. Deeper valley sections require four-wheel drive or travel on foot.

Parking

Park at an official gorge entrance, tourist base or in the last village. Do not leave a vehicle in a river bed or block pasture access.

Difficult sections and safety

Long climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. The route requires energy for the second half, so identify rest points in advance and avoid a late start. Download an offline map and tell someone when you expect to return.
