Route at a glance

The lower section offers a gradual start before woodland gives way to more open terrain. Along the way, wooded lower slopes, mountain meadows and rocky ground are revealed one section at a time. The main landmarks are Kara-Keche Pass and Son-Kuliu. Each deserves a short pause for both the details and the wider setting.

Getting there

Without a car

Travel from Bishkek by minibus to Kochkor or Naryn. A seasonal transfer is then required for the trailhead; regular public transport does not run directly to the high passes or Lake Song-Kul. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.

By car

The main approach runs via Balykchy to Kochkor or Naryn, followed by mountain gravel roads. Access to Lake Song-Kul and the Kara-Keche Pass is seasonal and unsuitable for some normal cars. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.

Parking

Leave the car at a yurt camp, settlement or firm signed area. Do not drive onto wet high-altitude meadows.

Difficult sections and safety

Long climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. The route requires energy for the second half, so identify rest points in advance and avoid a late start. The finish is separate from the start, so arrange the return journey before setting out.
