Getting there

Without a car
Reach Funchal by the main available train or bus connection, then continue to the start of “Caminho dos Pessegueiros” by local bus, shuttle, taxi or on foot as appropriate. Check seasonal timetables before travelling. This is a point-to-point route, so arrange the return from the finish in advance.
By car
Drive via the VR1 and Madeira regional roads toward the start of “Caminho dos Pessegueiros”. Continue only on roads open to private vehicles and complete restricted or rough sections on foot or by an authorised transfer. Leaving a car at the start does not solve the return journey.
Parking
Use an official car park at a signed levada, viewpoint or cable-car car park. Keep access roads, barriers and emergency routes clear.

What to expect

Левада Мадейры
Caminho dos Pessegueiros
лаурисильва Мадейры

Difficult sections and safety

Climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. Expect strong wind on exposed sections and keep away from unprotected edges. The finish is separate from the start, so return logistics should be arranged before setting out.

How much time to allow

Pure moving time 3–6 hours
Complete time on the route 5–7 hours

Best time to go

In summer plan for heat and sun; in winter plan for wind, rain and shorter daylight
After heavy rain, rocks, steps and unpaved ground may be slippery

water and food
a charged phone with an offline map
a small first-aid kit
