Route at a glance

The lower section offers a gradual start before woodland gives way to more open terrain. Even the connecting sections remain engaging because of wooded lower slopes, mountain meadows and rocky ground. The most distinctive places are Tru Dles Viles and Dolomites. It is worth allowing time for a brief stop at each one.

Getting there

Travel by train to Bolzano, Bressanone, Brunico or Calalzo di Cadore, then continue by regional bus into the relevant valley. The final approach to the trailhead may involve a cable car or a walk. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.

By car

Reach the region via the A22, then use the SS12, SS48, SS51, SS242 or local pass roads, depending on the valley. Traffic and parking may be controlled at popular passes. Parking

Park at a lower cable-car terminal, visitor centre or official pass car park. Do not leave a vehicle on pasture or service roads.

Long climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. The finish is separate from the start, so arrange the return journey before setting out. Download an offline map and tell someone when you expect to return.
