Route at a glance

The shoreline continually changes perspective, moving between sheltered sections and exposed headlands. The combination of coastal paths, exposed headlands and sheltered bays gives the journey its variety. The main line of the experience is formed by Lake District National Park and Ullswater. They are spaced through the journey so that the area reveals itself gradually.

Getting there

Without a car

The main rail hubs are Penrith North Lakes, Windermere and Oxenholme. Regional buses continue to Keswick, Pooley Bridge, Ambleside and other valleys; use the service for the trailhead near the trailhead.

By car

Reach the area via the M6, A66 and A591, followed by narrow valley roads. Use passing places correctly and keep farm access clear.

Parking

Use official National Trust car parks, visitor-centre parking or a village car park. Popular valleys fill quickly.
