Travel from Bishkek to Karakol by coach or minibus. Continue by local bus, taxi or four-wheel-drive transfer to Ak-Suu, Jeti-Ögüz or the relevant gorge entrance near the trailhead. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.

Drive from Bishkek via Balykchy and around Lake Issyk-Kul to Karakol, then use local roads to the chosen gorge. Deeper valley sections require four-wheel drive or travel on foot. Difficult sections and safety

Long climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. The route requires energy for the second half, so identify rest points in advance and avoid a late start. The finish is separate from the start, so arrange the return journey before setting out.
