Teide Volcanic Route: Mar a cumbre de Arico

Route at a glance

The opening section includes Mar a cumbre de Arico. Vegetation gradually gives way to lava fields, dark rock and open volcanic ground. Later, the main places are Teide and Pico Viejo. There are several suitable points to pause and look around.

Reach Teide National Park by the main available train or bus connection, then continue to the start of “Teide Volcanic Route: Mar a cumbre de Arico” by local bus, shuttle, taxi or on foot as appropriate. Check seasonal timetables before travelling. This is a point-to-point route, so arrange the return from the finish in advance.

By car

Drive via the TF-21, TF-24 or TF-38 toward the start of “Teide Volcanic Route: Mar a cumbre de Arico”. Continue only on roads open to private vehicles and complete restricted or rough sections on foot or by an authorised transfer. Leaving a car at the start does not solve the return journey.

Parking

Use an official car park at the cable car, El Portillo, Roques de García or another signed trailhead. Keep access roads, barriers and emergency routes clear.

Difficult sections and safety

The distance should be split into stages, with overnight options, water sources and exit points checked in advance. Climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. Choose footing carefully on rocks and scree; traction deteriorates quickly after rain.
