Route at a glance

This is a substantial journey along the lesser-known southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, combining natural landscapes with coastal defence sites, historic settlements and a lighthouse. It can be completed as a through-hike or divided into day sections using nearby roads and settlements. The supplied GPX is longer than the official trail and adds an urban or suburban approach from the east.

Getting there

Without a car
The extended GPX starts near Lomonosov, served by suburban trains to Oranienbaum stations and city transport. The official section near Bolshaya Izhora is also accessible from its rail stop. The finish lies toward Sosnovy Bor and Kalishche, with onward train, bus or taxi options. Save timetables offline and verify transport for every daily stage. A bus road generally runs a few kilometres inland, but not every exit from the coast is convenient or legal.
By car
A single car is impractical for a 63 km linear trail. Use two vehicles, arrange a transfer, or leave the car at a railway station and return by public transport. Do not attempt to reach every coastal point by forest tracks. Parts of the route cross protected areas, shoreline protection zones and land subject to border controls.
Parking
For a multi-day walk, use legal public parking in Lomonosov, Bolshaya Izhora, Lebyazhye, Shepelevo or Sosnovy Bor according to the chosen stage. Do not leave a vehicle for several days at an informal forest entrance or inside the protected shoreline zone.

What to expect

The southern shore of the Gulf of Finland and long coastal forests
Lebyazhy and Bianchi Glade nature reserves
Fort Krasnaya Gorka
The Grey Horse coastal battery
Stony Cape
Shepelevsky Lighthouse
Villages, sandy sections and river crossings
An extended 63 km GPX instead of the official 47 km route

Difficult sections and safety

Distance is the main challenge rather than elevation. Sand, wet soil, tall vegetation and river detours reduce the pace, while strong wind off the gulf can chill quickly. Confirm water, food, legal camps and exit points for each day; never assume every shop or water source will be available. Tents and fires are allowed only at permitted sites. The official route identifies overnight areas near Fort Krasnaya Gorka, the Grey Horse battery and Stony Cape, but their current condition and regulations must be checked before departure. Part of the route lies close to the state border. Russian citizens should carry a passport, while foreign nationals may require a permit arranged in advance. Do not enter closed fort structures, obey signs around military and industrial land, and stay within the permitted corridor in nature reserves.

Best time to go

The official route is listed as year-round, but late May to September is best for a multi-day hike. Sections may be wet in spring and after storms, ticks and mosquitoes are active in summer, and daylight shortens quickly in autumn.
A 63 km winter journey needs separate preparation, warm equipment and shorter stages. Avoid or postpone exposed shoreline sections during storm-force wind and high water.

What to bring

comfortable hiking boots
a backpack and waterproof protection for equipment
water plus a treatment method
food planned around confirmed shops
a tent and stove only for permitted campsites
offline maps, the GPX and a power bank
a head torch
a first-aid kit, insect repellent and tick protection
a passport and any required border-zone documents
