Route at a glance

Woodland offers shelter from the wind, while open sections add space to the winter journey. The combination of snow-covered tracks, sheltered woodland and open clearings gives the journey its variety. The main line of the experience is formed by Kartakoy and Lyzhnogo marshruta Ershi. They are spaced through the journey so that the area reveals itself gradually.

Getting there

Without a car
Use the Trans-Siberian Railway to Slyudyanka-1, Kultuk or another station on the southern shore of Lake Baikal. Continue towards the trailhead on foot, by local taxi or by suburban train to the nearest stop.
By car
From Irkutsk, follow the R-258 Baikal highway to Kultuk and Slyudyanka. Use only authorised streets and roads to reach forest and mountain trailheads; continue on foot into the upper valleys.
Parking
Park beside Slyudyanka-1 station, at a tourist base, rescue station or signed town car park. Keep streets leading towards mountain trails clear.

Difficult sections and safety

The main difficulty depends on trail conditions: after rain the surface may become slippery and the usual pace may slow. The route requires energy for the second half, so identify rest points in advance and avoid a late start.
