Around Trail at Shumak: A Day Outdoors

The combination of maintained paths, natural observation areas and interpretive stops gives the journey its variety. The main landmarks are Tunka Valley, Shumak and Eastern Sayan. Getting there

Without a car

Travel from Irkutsk by bus to Arshan, Nilova Pustyn or another resort settlement in the Tunka Valley. A local taxi or pre-booked transfer may be required for the remote start near the trailhead.

By car

From Irkutsk, take the R-258 to Kultuk and then the A-333 through the Tunka Valley. Mountain tracks and approaches towards Shumak are not suitable for a normal car throughout.

Parking

Leave the car in official parking at Arshan, Nilova Pustyn, a tourist base or the last village. For a multi-day trip, confirm that long-stay parking is permitted.

Difficult sections and safety

The main difficulty depends on trail conditions: after rain the surface may become slippery and the usual pace may slow. The route requires energy for the second half, so identify rest points in advance and avoid a late start.
