The lower section offers a gradual start before woodland gives way to more open terrain. The combination of wooded lower slopes, mountain meadows and rocky ground gives the journey its variety. The most distinctive places are Tunka Valley, Arshan-Shumak and Eastern Sayan. It is worth allowing time for a brief stop at each one.

Getting there

Without a car
Travel from Irkutsk by bus to Arshan, Nilova Pustyn or another resort settlement in the Tunka Valley. A local taxi or pre-booked transfer may be required for the remote start near the trailhead. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.
By car
From Irkutsk, take the R-258 to Kultuk and then the A-333 through the Tunka Valley. Mountain tracks and approaches towards Shumak are not suitable for a normal car throughout. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.
Parking
Leave the car in official parking at Arshan, Nilova Pustyn, a tourist base or the last village. For a multi-day trip, confirm that long-stay parking is permitted.

Difficult sections and safety

The main difficulty depends on trail conditions: after rain the surface may become slippery and the usual pace may slow. The route requires energy for the second half, so identify rest points in advance and avoid a late start. The finish is separate from the start, so arrange the return journey before setting out.
