The lower section offers a gradual start before woodland gives way to more open terrain. The character of the area is especially clear in wooded lower slopes, mountain meadows and rocky ground. The main landmarks are Tunka Valley, Uchastka, Ekhe-Bulnaiu and Eastern Sayan. Each deserves a short pause for both the details and the wider setting.

Getting there

Without a car
Travel from Irkutsk by bus to Arshan, Nilova Pustyn or another resort settlement in the Tunka Valley. A local taxi or pre-booked transfer may be required for the remote start near the trailhead. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.
By car
From Irkutsk, take the R-258 to Kultuk and then the A-333 through the Tunka Valley. Mountain tracks and approaches towards Shumak are not suitable for a normal car throughout. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.
Parking
Leave the car in official parking at Arshan, Nilova Pustyn, a tourist base or the last village. For a multi-day trip, confirm that long-stay parking is permitted.

Difficult sections and safety

Long climbs and descents can slow the pace considerably, especially on wet or rocky ground. The finish is separate from the start, so arrange the return journey before setting out. Download an offline map and tell someone when you expect to return.
