Getting there

Without a car
Travel from Tbilisi to Telavi or Kvemo Alvani. The onward journey to Omalo is by seasonal four-wheel-drive transfer over the Abano Pass; there is no rail service to the trailhead. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.
By car
A normal car can reach Kvemo Alvani, but the Abano Pass road requires a capable four-wheel-drive vehicle and an experienced driver. Confirm that the pass is open before travelling. Because the start and finish are in different places, check the return service in advance, arrange a transfer or leave a second vehicle near the finish.
Parking
It is safer to leave a normal car in Kvemo Alvani or at the transfer base. In Omalo, use authorised guesthouse parking and keep the narrow lanes clear.
