Route at a glance

This is one of the most striking lowland waterfalls in the Leningrad Region and can be reached without a long hike. A short walk reveals the river ledge, limestone exposures and active erosion in the landscape. It is suitable for a family trip only with strict supervision near the water and cliffs.

Getting there

Without a car

Take a suburban train to Sablino station in Ulyanovka. Continue to the official entrance by local bus, taxi or on foot, depending on the current timetable and selected trailhead. Check the return connection before travelling. Do not use direct shortcuts across closed riverbank paths or private land.

By car

Drive to Ulyanovka and the official entrance to the Sablinsky nature trail. Use the trailhead coordinates and official map, as several different approaches serve the rivers and caves in this area. Do not follow informal tracks down to the waterfall or park inside the protected river corridor.

Parking

Use the permitted area at the official entrance. It can fill at weekends and should not be treated as guarded parking. Parking on verges, vegetation or beside the river descent is prohibited.

Difficult sections and safety

The main hazard is slippery limestone and clay beside the river. Stay away from unguarded cliff edges, do not descend loose slopes and never enter the plunge pool, where depth and current vary seasonally. Boardwalks, steps and soil become slippery after rain. Spring high water changes the waterfall and may flood lower approaches. The Sablino caves have separate visiting rules. Never enter undeveloped workings independently. Fires and camping outside permitted areas are prohibited.

Best time to go

The official trail season runs from May to October, after the snow melts and before lasting snow returns. The waterfall is strongest in spring, though banks are wet; summer flow may be lower; autumn brings attractive forest colour and shorter daylight.

Outside the official season, boardwalks and descents may be covered by snow and ice, so safe passage is not guaranteed.
