Route description

Barreiro begins beside Poço da Neve, where mountain snow was once stored for Funchal. The water channel then follows the Ecological Park hillside towards the lower Casa do Barreiro area, meeting Levada dos Tornos along the way. This version is substantially extended by returns and branches. PR 4 is currently only partly accessible: compare the permitted Ribeira das Cales passage with the municipal map and signs. Walking every section of this version is not confirmed at present.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Barreiro shows the different roles water played in Funchal’s life. Snow was kept in a stone store, while liquid water travelled along hillside levadas. The interest lies in that sequence of real objects: Poço da Neve, the Barreiro channel and the Tornos intersection. Choose an accessible visiting programme and save closed sections for the future.

Nearby

Continuing to Monte requires a separate passage beyond the lower park. It is outside this version and cannot bypass PR 4 restrictions. The Ecological Park centre at Ribeira das Cales can help clarify the permitted walk and collection. Neighbouring PR 3 towards Areeiro follows another line and needs its own plan.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
A direct regular service to the exact Poço da Neve departure is not confirmed. Choose an open PR 4 passage first, then arrange delivery and collection. Check current connections towards Ribeira das Cales for the municipal permitted exit; they do not establish collection from the previous lower endpoint. Save the arrangements before entering the mountains.
By car
The upper road landmark is Poço da Neve beside ER202 towards Areeiro. Estrada Municipal da Casa do Barreiro runs through the selected lower endpoint, but walking access to that end under current restrictions needs separate confirmation. The municipality identifies a permitted passage towards Ribeira das Cales. Select collection using the open-trail arrangement.
Parking
Permitted parking beside Poço da Neve for the whole selected walk is not confirmed. Establish vehicle storage and retrieval after selecting an open version. Check local rules before using an ER202 roadside place. The lower municipal road does not itself establish a parking facility.

What to expect

Places
Poço da Neve the stone mountain-snow store that supplied ice for the city.
Levada do Barreiro the named water channel followed by the main walk.
Levada dos Tornos another channel on the lower selected passage; confirm access to that part.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1144 м.
SurfaceImproved surface 17%, Dirt 8%, Gravel 2%, Unknown 73%.
Риски First establish which PR 4 sections are currently permitted. Follow signs on the open path and do not improvise links around closures. Wet stone, steps and accumulated tiredness from returns require attention on the descent. Postpone the walk in fog, heavy rain or strong wind. Channels do not establish drinking-water quality.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 5 h 32 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A full plan for this version is not established because PR 4 is partly accessible. The published usual descent timing excludes the selected returns and branches. Confirm the permitted sequence and road exit before allowing for Poço da Neve and levada-side walking. Do not arrange collection from an inaccessible endpoint using an earlier plan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
For the open part, choose settled dry weather and good visibility above Funchal. Poço da Neve can be considerably colder than the city. After rain, steps and channel banks matter more than the calendar season. Check the current municipal PR 4 arrangement before every visit.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Footwear with reliable grip
Your own drinking water and food
Rain and wind protection
