Route description

This Cumbrian journey unfolds gradually: northern village roads lead towards western lakeshores, open uplands and southern towns. Loweswater invites a pause beside the water, Kinniside offers a modest circle of standing stones, and Grange-over-Sands brings garden paths and the broad bay. Farther on, stone arches carry Devil’s Bridge across the Lune, while Appleby introduces the old street of Boroughgate. This distinct Lakes & Dales option begins near Newton Reigny and ends near Newton Rigg. Some branches suit visits on foot. Before a complete cycling trip, its connections require revision: private driveways occur, and one A590 section follows a one-way carriageway against traffic. The whole option cannot be used as a ready, safe cycle circuit; its individual sights can inform a newly prepared itinerary.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Build a journey in which quiet lakeshores give way to seaside gardens, old bridges and market-town streets. Compare the different faces of Cumbria: wooded Loweswater, the reconstructed Kinniside circle and the carefully laid stone of Devil’s Bridge. Once permitted connections are checked, these stops can shape a rewarding tour with time to explore on foot.

Nearby

Cartmel Priory can be visited by a separate approach in the village; check arrangements at this working church. Appleby Castle lies away from the selected street and is not an included interior visit. Holme Force waterfall near Loweswater requires its own detour. Grange-over-Sands promenade remains a land-based outing: an independent crossing of Morecambe Bay sands is outside this journey.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
For the northern side, arrive at Penrith North Lakes and plan a separate connection to Newton Reigny. The finish near Newton Rigg also requires a return to the station. Grange-over-Sands station offers southern access through Station Square. Check bicycle carriage and reservations on your chosen trains. Access to individual sections does not establish a rideable complete itinerary.
By car
Choose a specific settlement or prearranged overnight base for vehicle access. Newton Reigny and Newton Rigg are distinct northern ends, so plan your return to the car separately. Do not use private property approaches or narrow walking branches for vehicle support. Driving between permitted meeting points needs its own road plan.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Before a multi-day trip, check where the car may stay for the full period and arrange the return. Visitor parking at an attraction does not establish permission for extended car storage. Leave farm gateways, narrow-road verges and walking entrances unobstructed.

What to expect

Places
Loweswater Shore a western lakeside stop reached on a walking branch beside the water.
Kinniside Stone Circle modest standing stones beside the open fell road. The present arrangement was reconstructed in 1925; its ancient form is uncertain.
Grange-over-Sands Ornamental Gardens a pond with water birds and paths for an unhurried visit on foot.
Devil’s Bridge over the Lune a medieval crossing with three stone arches; local folklore attributes its construction to the devil.
Low Cross in Appleby a historic column at the lower end of Boroughgate beside the old town’s arcaded frontage.

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 4962 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 31%, Dirt / grass 3%, Dirt 1%, Unknown 64%.
Риски Do not follow the wrong-way A590 carriageway section: replace it with a permitted connection before setting off, without crossing the central reservation. Western branches, the Loweswater approach and garden paths include sections where cycling is prohibited. Private approaches near Lowick need permission or another route. Narrow country roads bring motor traffic, blind bends and steep descents. In Grange-over-Sands, avoid the closed Bayley Lane level crossing; the council directs promenade access through the underpass from Main Street Car Park. The itinerary does not go onto the bay sands.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 1 d 8 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A multi-day plan for the complete journey has not been established. After revising restricted sections, choose overnight stops in accessible settlements and allow time to explore the lakeshore, gardens and bridge on foot. The standard Lakes & Dales schedule describes another option and is not a ready timetable for this journey. Include a separate return from Newton Rigg to your train or car.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Late spring, summer and early autumn offer longer daylight for a separately prepared trip. Unpaved walking branches can become slippery after rain, and open roads are exposed to wind. Winter brings possible ice and a smaller daylight reserve. Choose dates after checking permitted connections; fair weather does not remove road restrictions.
