Route description

This expanded Eamont Way outing links Penrith with Pooley Bridge through the River Eamont’s rural valley. In the station area, red Penrith Castle ruins can be seen before town gives way to fields, hedge-lined passages and river bridges. The selected version revisits several familiar sections, making the arrival at the lake the conclusion of a full walking day. At Pooley Bridge the character changes: the present steel crossing recalls recovery after a destructive flood, the Fish Cross remembers the village’s trading past, and the lakeside Birkett Memorial tells the story of protecting Ullswater. After the shore branch, the outing finishes beside the village parking area. Select your return journey to Penrith before leaving.

Nearby

Exploring inside Penrith Castle ruins requires a separate visit; the published winter park hours end earlier. Yanwath Hall, Barton Church and other places in the standard guide are not automatically included in this version. Mayburgh Henge, Brougham Castle and King Arthur’s Round Table belong to another walk. The Ullswater Steamers pier offers a separate onward outing following its own timetable.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrive by train at Penrith North Lakes station and make the separate approach to the Ullswater Road departure. Choose a bus back to Penrith from Pooley Bridge: service 508 is described as year-round, while the published 2026 season for 509 ends on 1 November. Check the specific journey and stop. A separate Ullswater boat trip does not return you to the station by itself.
By car
The departure is in Penrith’s station area beside Ullswater Road. Plan road access to your selected permitted parking. The finish is at Pooley Bridge, so arrange a bus, transfer or other return connection beforehand. Avoid private shop and residential parking along the countryside portion.
Parking
Penrith station has paid parking. Conditions for visitors without a train journey can differ from railway-user tariffs; confirm permitted duration and payment with the operator. Check town-centre parking separately. Pooley Bridge requires its own parking arrangements if you choose to base the trip at the finishing village.

SurfaceAsphalt 19%, Improved surface 12%, Dirt / grass 9%, Unknown 56%.
Риски Expect field gates, occasional narrow and uneven passages, wet farmland and road crossings. Consider flood conditions and muddy ground after heavy rain. Follow current Eamont Way signs, as former branches can differ from today’s passage. Repeated sections add effort. Keep dogs on a lead near livestock and supervise children beside water and roads.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 5 h 5 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow an estimated 4.5–6 hours for the expanded outing with lakeside and history stops. Add the station approach and return bus journey. The shorter standard Eamont Way takes less time and omits repeated passages in this version. Start early in autumn so the rural part ends in daylight.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a day without flood risk or prolonged rain. Spring and summer favour stops beside the lake and rivers; autumn makes an early departure especially useful. Winter field paths can be wet or slippery. Check the 509 season and boat sailings separately, and consult a specific timetable even for year-round bus connections.
