Route description

This Central Portuguese Way starts near Santa Luzia in the Barcouço area and heads towards Compostela through northern Portugal and Galicia. São Sebastião Chapel appears early in Mealhada; Old Marnel Bridge and the Romanesque D. Zameiro crossing later introduce different periods of road construction. At Ponte de Lima the route approaches the old stone bridge and Santo António Chapel. Its Galician part passes San Domingos in Tui and the Peregrina Sanctuary in Pontevedra. Santiago’s cathedral complex provides the concluding town stop on this long pilgrimage.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Walk the Portuguese section before the familiar Galician starting point at Tui and compare three historic bridges: Marnel, D. Zameiro and Ponte de Lima. Each has its own rebuilding history, making separate visits more rewarding than simply calling them all Roman. In Pontevedra, the Peregrina church connects architecture with the pilgrim’s recognisable shell symbol. A longer journey makes time for small chapels as well as town squares.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car: Hard With children: No With a dog: No data By bike: Partially With a stroller: No Mobile signal: No data The complete walk suits prepared travellers with accommodation selected beforehand. Reaching the departure requires a separate transfer from the railway. Town sections are easier than the full journey and do not describe the whole route’s demands. Select cycling alternatives separately and agree on animal accommodation with each host.

Nearby

Allow separate town approaches for interior visits to Porto Cathedral and Tui Cathedral: appearing in a general guide does not place them directly on this passage. Peregrina sightseeing depends on services and dome access has separate conditions. Santiago’s basilica and museum complex have different admission arrangements; a large walking backpack may affect entry. Check visits before planning the last day.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
CP lists Pampilhosa and Mealhada in the current regional timetable for the northern line. Choose a suitable arrival and arrange a separate transfer to Santa Luzia: the station is away from the departure. Check services for your travel date. Plan the Santiago exit and possible shorter journeys from intermediate towns before starting.
By car
The departure lies near Santa Luzia in the Barcouço area. Agree on a precise drop-off place and check signs on the final local approach. Porto and Tui belong to later parts of the journey, so arriving there changes the passage you undertake. Select a legal Santiago collection place with a final walk; car support along every trail has not been established.
Parking
There is no confirmed long-stay vehicle-storage location at this departure. Agree on storage with your chosen accommodation host or another operator before travelling. Check the permitted duration and arrange a return to your car. Respect signs in intermediate towns and keep entrances clear; a short stopping place does not establish permission to leave a car for the full walk.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 6720 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 40%, Paving stones 8%, Compacted dirt 4%, Unknown 41%.
Риски Repeated daily walking with a pack requires a gradual pace and accommodation arranged beforehand. Check safe road crossings and wet stone near historic bridges. Pontevedra has different approaches: local tourism warns of roots, mud and water on the Gafos path. Establish which passage you are choosing; modern alternatives do not all coincide with this long version.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 4 d 22 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow 18–22 days of walking for the complete journey from the Santa Luzia area, adding spare time for rest and visits. This is an editorial allowance; distribute accommodation according to your preparation. Plan the Portuguese part through Mealhada, the Marnel area and Porto, then Barcelos and Ponte de Lima, the Galician entry through Tui and the later days towards Pontevedra and Santiago. A short itinerary starting only at Tui does not cover this entire route.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Moderate temperatures suit sustained daily walking. In spring and autumn, check rain, watercourse conditions and accommodation availability; start exposed summer road sections earlier. After heavy rain, check riverside paths and old crossings separately. Allow for short daylight and seasonal accommodation opening in winter.
