Route description

The western approach to Kebnekaise’s south summit begins in a mountain valley, then gradually leaves the green ground below. Beyond the stony slopes of Vierranvárri lies Kaffedalen, where the shape of the day becomes clear: descend before climbing again towards the summit. Valleys, scree and snow make this a demanding mountain journey. Reaching the top is conditional on weather and the state of the upper slopes; a well-timed turnaround can be the right outcome when wind, cloud or snow conditions deteriorate.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Rocky slopes, snow and ice demand suitable footwear and skills. The return also climbs back over Vierranvárri, so turn around with energy in reserve. Conditions on the narrow exposed south summit may require crampons; ask the station guides and do not venture onto ice without preparation. Strong wind, poor visibility or high streams can change the plan. Include the return to the station from the start of the day.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 10–15 h
With stops | a full day with reserve time STF gives 10–15 hours for the western summit outing and return to the mountain station. Plan for a safe return, rather than arrival at the summit. The approach from Nikkaluokta and a rest beforehand are separate; slow progress or difficult snow may extend the day.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer is the most appropriate season for a prepared walking ascent, but snow and ice can remain high on the mountain. Ask the station for current advice on snow, stream levels and weather. Winter Kebnekaise requires different experience and equipment; the western summer route is not a routine winter option.
