Route description

The Grand Oisans and Ecrins Tour links valleys where mountain life still depends on pasture, passes and huts. Emparis opens toward La Meije; beyond Arsine, the walk changes sides of the massif, while above Vallouise it meets the rocky Aup Martin. Crossings toward Champoleon and Valgaudemar lead into a return through the western Ecrins. The attraction is the gradual change of place: a familiar summit disappears and another valley reveals a different side of the mountains. This selected start lies on the Selle valley path and needs a separate approach. Returned sections and additional pass approaches are included, so overnight stops should fit your chosen sequence of valleys rather than a single standard schedule.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data This is a sustained mountain journey for prepared participants who can negotiate scree and plan overnight stops. Buses reach valley settlements, while this start lies on the Selle valley path. Visitor dogs are prohibited even on a leash in the national park core, and the complete tour is unsuitable for a bicycle journey.

Nearby

Ascents of La Meije and Barre des Ecrins are outside this walking tour and require separate mountaineering preparation. The Arsine glacial-lake approach is also additional to the pass crossing; decide beforehand whether it belongs in your day’s plan.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
The official GR54 guide confirms buses between Grenoble and Bourg-d’Oisans. This is one valley entry to the large tour; the Selle valley start needs a separate walking approach and arrival plan. Check local connections before booking overnight stops.
By car
For the western valley entry, the guide describes road access to Bourg-d’Oisans via Vizille and D1091. For an approach from Vallouise, heed the current Onde valley road warning: following damage, visitor parking has moved to Béassac chapel, with onward access on foot.
Parking
On 12 October 2026, the Aup Martin approach page directs visitors to parking at Béassac chapel. For entry through Bourg-d’Oisans, the official guide identifies Vénéon parking behind the tourist office. Confirm multi-day vehicle storage and current road conditions beforehand.

What to expect

Places

Arsine Pass a crossing between sides of the massif on the way from Villar-d’Arène toward the Guisane valley.
Muzelle Pass the mountain crossing toward the Vénéon side.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 20293 м.
SurfaceDirt / grass 13%, Dirt 9%, Asphalt 7%, Unknown 63%.
Риски Aup Martin and neighbouring passes require confidence on loose shale; lingering snow may be hard and dangerous. Seasonal footbridges and roads can change after floods. If a passage is closed or beyond the group’s experience, choose another valley and rearrange the overnight stop. Livestock guardian dogs work beside herds: give the animals a calm, wide berth.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 14–17 days
With stops | 17–21 days The plan covers the large circuit including returned sections and additional pass approaches, at roughly five to seven walking hours a day. The longer range includes weather waits and rest days. Arrange the valley approach and booked overnight stops separately. The standard GR54’s thirteen-day schedule does not exactly describe this variant.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The main window is late June to mid-September, but these dates do not establish that every pass is walkable. Ask national park houses about snow, bridges and damaged sections before departure. Autumn hut closures and early snowfall require a larger margin.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain boots, poles, warm layers and full rain protection.
