Route description

This eastern Þórsmörk circuit begins beside the hut in Langidalur and explores the wooded slopes above Krossá. Local paths lead into the hills before returning to river channels and the lower valley. Low woodland meets an open river landscape, giving the walk a clear change of character between hillside and water. The finish back in Langidalur suits a prearranged departure. Short return sections form part of this version; a separate ascent of Valahnúkur is an additional outing.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Choose the circuit to explore the eastern side of Langidalur and spend time on its paths beyond the hut grounds. Krossá’s channels reveal a valley shaped by moving water. Skagfjörðsskáli Hut connects the setting with Iceland’s hiking tradition and provides a recognisable beginning and return point.

Nearby

Valahnúkur lies west of the selected circuit and requires a separate ascent. The complete Tindfjöll circuit and a visit to Húsadalur are additional outings. A nearby Slyppugil name does not establish a walk through the whole canyon. Summer hut facilities carry a fee for day visitors; confirm meals or accommodation separately.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrange arrival specifically in Langidalur. The 2026 summer Highland Bus timetable includes this stop, with the main outward season ending 20 September and the return season 24 September. Autumn service needs fresh confirmation. Húsadalur and Básar are separate drop-off locations with additional approaches. Agree the return departure beforehand and allow time for waterside crossings.
By car
Leave an ordinary car before the mountain river crossings and book specialist onward transport to Langidalur. F249 crosses unbridged rivers. The operator warns against attempting the main Krossá crossing independently even in a 4x4. Water levels and road conditions determine access, so obtain confirmation before departure.
Parking
The operator confirms parking at Brú Base on road 249 for a booked onward journey. Confirm parking arrangements, the meeting point and delivery specifically to Langidalur. Avoid planning around an assured walk from parking beside the main Krossá: the portable footbridge can move or be removed during floods.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 350 м.
SurfaceDirt / grass 15%, Improved surface 2%, Artificial surface 1%, Unknown 83%.
Риски The hills include dirt mountain paths and short, more demanding passages. Some waterside sections involve fords; rain and rising water can change conditions. Ask the warden about the selected circuit before setting out. Return along an authorised route if a crossing is unsafe. This walk does not require an independent crossing of the main Krossá flow to Básar.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 21 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow an estimated 3–4 hours for the complete circuit, return sections and pauses. This is an editorial estimate for the selected walk, rather than the timing of another Þórsmörk hike. River conditions may require a changed plan. Check the crossings first and set a Langidalur return time consistent with your transport.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The summer transport and hut season offers the most convenient access when paths are passable. Water, weather and the opening of F249 determine actual conditions. The summer timetable has ended by October, when hut availability also needs separate confirmation. Winter arrival and walking require specialist arrangements and experience of Icelandic winter travel.
