Route description

From the Otovitsa area, the route gradually leaves the wooded valley for Rila’s open slopes. Its high section passes Kabul and the upper crest beside Otovishki Peak, linking two distinctive summits with quieter approaches. The southern passage heads towards the Ivan Vazov area before return sections and branches lead back to the mountain’s northwestern side. The changing relationship between forest and ridge gives the journey its character. It finishes on a mountain path rather than at a hut entrance, so road access and any overnight stay need an agreed continuation.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Explore northwestern Rila through its forest valleys and upper crests. Kabul and Otovishki Peak provide specific mountain destinations, with Otovitsa Stream linking them to the lower approach. Return passages add to the journey, making this a version for walkers willing to spend more time in the area and arrange overnight and finish connections separately.

Nearby

Ivan Vazov Hut lies beyond the southern turning point; its approach and overnight stay are additional. Otovitsa Hut stands near the departure area, but operation and accommodation need confirmation. The Seven Rila Lakes and other high routes are separate continuations. Use only authorised park overnight sites.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Regular service directly to the mountain departure is not established. Arrange arrival in the lower Samoranovo area, followed by a separate walking approach to Otovitsa. The finish is on a mountain path, so arrange collection after an agreed descent to an accessible road. This is a larger journey than a short connection between huts.
By car
Plan ordinary road arrival at the lower village of Samoranovo. Any further mountain drive requires current road and permission checks; an old account of 4x4 access does not establish today’s conditions. National park driving is restricted to designated roads and permits. Arrange walking connections to the departure and from the mountain finish.
Parking
Parking at the mountain departure is unconfirmed. Use authorised lower road parking and check arrangements for leaving a vehicle during an extended outing. Plan the return from the separate slope finish. Huts and old forest roads do not establish accessible vehicle parking.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceDirt / grass 4%, Unknown 96%.
Риски The extended outing includes steep mountain paths, uneven woodland passages and an exposed upper crest. Fog makes junctions and return sections harder to follow. Compare older branches with current authorised, designated paths; unmarked shortcuts do not replace hiking routes. Wind and cold are stronger on the high section. Keep dogs on a lead and confirm any overnight arrangements for them separately.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 13 h 19 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The complete duration is not established. A day-by-day plan is not established: agree the order of return passages, overnight arrangements and the connection from the separate mountain finish before travelling. Treat the version as a multi-day mountain outing. Standard timing between Otovitsa and Ivan Vazov excludes these peaks and return passages. Avoid relying on an arbitrary overnight site inside the park.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose snow-free conditions across the upper crest, a settled forecast and sufficient daylight. Snow can remain above the forest in early summer. Autumn brings rapid cooling and early snowfall. Winter needs different preparation and confirmed usable routes; summer connections do not replace winter arrangements.
