Route description

From the Ivan Vazov Hut area, this extended passage approaches the upper Kalin lake and Golyam Polich ridge before descending towards Karaula and Padala. Stony high mountains gradually give way to lower slopes and woodland above the village. Branches and return passages bring familiar places back from another direction, turning a simple downhill journey into a wider exploration of western Rila. The departure is already in the mountains and the finish is in Padala, so the approach to the hut and the complete journey need a separate plan.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
The route links Rila at several scales: a mountain hut, a small upper lake, the exposed Polich crest and Karaula above the forest descent. Finishing in Padala returns the journey to village roads and slopes with a different relationship to the mountains. Choose it for an extended exploration with accommodation and the visiting order agreed beforehand.

Nearby

The Kalin summits, Malak Polich and the other lake basins are separate from this passage. The Vincheto building stands near an upper connection but is not confirmed as usable accommodation. Rila Monastery requires a separate lower-area journey. Confirm hut facilities, authorised overnight sites and arrangements for dogs before travelling.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Regular service directly to the upper departure is not established. Arrange a separate mountain approach to Ivan Vazov with a usable path and accommodation confirmed. After finishing, organise collection in Padala or another confirmed road departure. Arrival in the lower village does not replace the hut departure.
By car
Padala has a separate approach from the road leading from Rila town towards Rila Monastery. Use the village for prearranged collection after the descent. Vehicle access to the upper departure is not confirmed or part of the plan. Recheck the village road and authorised meeting places beforehand; mountain drives need separate permission checks.
Parking
Parking at the upper departure is unconfirmed. If leaving a vehicle in the lower road area, agree an authorised place and extended parking arrangements beforehand. The Padala finish provides a collection location rather than confirmed free parking for several days. Avoid relying on vehicle access along mountain hiking paths to the hut.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 2361 м.
SurfaceDirt / grass 23%, Gravel 9%, Unknown 69%.
Риски High sections are exposed to wind, while stony and grassy passages require confident footing. Extended return sections and different descent branches complicate navigation. Confirm which older connections remain authorised and designated beforehand; historic unmarked shortcuts do not establish current hiking routes. Forest surfaces become slippery after rain. Keep enough energy for the village finish.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 14 h 29 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The complete duration is not established. A day-by-day plan is not established: agree accommodation, upper return passages and the descent branch with a local guide or hut beforehand. Treat the version as a multi-day mountain journey. Identify each day’s finish and available road exits before setting out. Standard timing for a direct descent or a different historic circuit excludes this expanded version.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Prefer snow-free upper ridges and a settled forecast. Lower woodland may look accessible while snow and cold remain above. Watch early snowfall and shorter daylight in autumn. Winter requires a separate programme rather than the summer walking sequence.
