Подготовка к маршруту

Route at a glance

A single walk combines quiet woodland, a small river and the open horizon of the Gulf of Finland. The shore is especially rewarding for birdwatching during spring and autumn migration. It is a good option for visitors seeking an undeveloped coastal nature trail with little elevation gain.

Getting there

Without a car
Public transport is limited in this part of Kingisepp District. Buses may reach nearby settlements or junctions on the regional road, but the official trailhead usually requires a taxi or a substantial walk. Plan the journey to the exact start point rather than simply searching for the reserve. Arrange the return connection in advance.
By car
Approach Kotelsky Nature Reserve by regional roads and use the official trail map for the final turn. Koporye Bay has a long shoreline, and not every forest access road is legal or suitable for visitors. The approach and trail may be wet after rain or during high water. Do not pass barriers or enter roads closed under the reserve regulations.
Parking
Leave the car only at the official entrance or a permitted area shown on the route map. No guarded parking has been confirmed. Do not park on vegetation, beside bridges or on narrow access roads.

What to expect

Pine and mixed old-growth woodland
The Peipiya River and its crossing
Two viewpoints over Koporye Bay
Shallow coastal waters of the Gulf of Finland
Spring and autumn bird migration sites
Forest roads, roots and wet ground

Difficult sections and safety

The key risk is changing water level. Strong onshore wind can reverse the flow of the Peipiya River and raise the water significantly. River crossings may then become difficult or unsafe. Never attempt to wade through flooded sections; turn back instead. Roots, bridges and coastal ground become slippery after rain. Keep away from the edge of old or damaged structures near the shore. The route is inside a protected area. Stay on the path, do not disturb nesting birds, light fires or leave litter.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время маршрута 1 h 56 min

Расчёт учитывает дистанцию и набор высоты. Добавьте запас на отдых, погоду и навигацию.

Best time to go

May to October is generally the most comfortable period. Spring and autumn bring bird migration but also a greater chance of wind-driven high water in the Peipiya River. In summer, use protection against ticks, mosquitoes and coastal sun.
Check the wind forecast, recent rainfall and current notices from the Leningrad Region Protected Areas Directorate before travelling.

What to bring

water-resistant footwear with good grip
a windproof and waterproof layer
water and food
insect repellent and tick protection
binoculars for birdwatching
an offline map and the GPX
a power bank
a bag for carrying out your litter
