Route description

This version begins beside Chigordali Waterfall and leads back towards Arkhyz through the Kizgych valley. The cascade comes first, followed by river, woodland and a small memorial to the defenders of the Caucasus. However, the Teberdinsky National Park’s current guidance prohibits visits to Chigordali and states that permission documents are not issued. The full direction is therefore unavailable as a tourist walk; an older excursion offer does not change that rule.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
The geographical interest lies in moving from a side-stream waterfall into the larger wooded valley and towards Arkhyz. It combines a natural destination with a specific memorial beside Kizgych. For now, explore the area on officially open trails and use this return-direction description to understand the landscape rather than to plan a prohibited visit.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
The full walk cannot be planned by any visitor group under the current prohibition. Physically, it is a return through woodland from a remote cascade, with a separate approach required to reach the start. Arkhyz near the ending does not make it a simple village-to-waterfall outing.

Nearby

Kazachiy Waterfall lies on another branch outside this return direction; check its own official status for a separate visit. Lake of Love is also prohibited under the park’s current guidance and cannot be added to the outing. The memorial at Taulu’s Sofia meadow and the mountain-pass defenders’ museum in Karachayevsk are different places from the small memorial beside Kizgych.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
No direct scheduled transport to the waterfall is verified. Arkhyz lies near the lower ending, but travelling to the village does not establish lawful access to Chigordali. Do not arrange a transfer for this closed outing. Current services to Arkhyz can instead support another officially permitted walk.
By car
Vehicle access directly to Chigordali is unverified. This direction follows a wooded approach and ends near the lower entrance by Arkhyz. Under the current prohibition, driving to an entrance does not authorise a waterfall visit. Check vehicle arrangements separately for any other open walk.
Parking
Authorised parking for visiting this closed direction is unverified. Ask accommodation or local services about vehicle arrangements for a trip to Arkhyz. Roadsides beside protected land cannot be assumed to provide parking.

What to expect

Places
Chigordali Waterfall the named cascade at the upper start of the return direction; visits are currently prohibited.
Kizgych River the mountain river beside the wooded section towards Arkhyz.
Defenders of the Caucasus 1942 Memorial a small memorial in the Kizgych valley. These features describe the full direction’s geography rather than a currently permitted excursion.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The immediate restriction is the prohibition on visiting the waterfall. If access changes, review the side-stream approach, wet rocks and wooded path after rain. The start is remote from the village, so the return cannot be judged simply as an easy downhill stroll. Reaching the cascade beforehand requires its own plan.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 8 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Do not plan the full Chigordali outing under the current rules. If the protection regime officially changes, allow separately for reaching the waterfall, pausing there and returning through Kizgych towards Arkhyz. This version describes the return and does not include the earlier approach to the high start. Additional side destinations would lengthen the day further.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The season does not override protected-area restrictions. Any future permitted visit would require a dry woodland path, no snow or ice beside the cascade and adequate daylight. Summer photographs from older excursions do not establish reopening. Check an official decision first, followed by water conditions and weather.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Choose an open trail for the current visit. For permitted woodland outings in the area, useful items include:
Footwear with tread
Waterproof and warm layers
Drinking water and food
An offline map, charged phone and torch
First-aid kit and insect protection
A rubbish bag
Equipment does not replace permitted access to protected land.
