Route description

This version links the Sofia lakes with Sapozhok in a mountain traverse between two places in the Sofia valley. From the Glacier Farm approach area, the climb crosses Irkiz to Great Sofia Lake, then Kyolaush leads towards Sapozhok. The descent follows a different valley, Gammesh-Chat, beside its rock slabs. Changing valleys makes the outing particularly varied, but the finish is below the start: arrange your return vehicle there.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Choose the traverse for its sequence of lake basins and valleys. A pass separates Great Sofia Lake from Sapozhok, while the Gammesh-Chat descent reveals another side of the mountains. It links familiar photographic destinations into one outing for walkers with experience of long mountain days and a substantial descent.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car: Hard With children: With caution With a dog: No data By bike: No With a stroller: No Mobile signal: No data Arrange travel to the beginning and a separate collection below. Children need an individual assessment of experience, stamina and conditions with a companion familiar with the terrain. Upper rocky crossings are unsuitable for a stroller or ordinary cycling. Dog access and reliable signal coverage are unverified.

Nearby

Small Sofia Lake is beside the upper path, but this version does not include a separate descent to its shore. The same applies to Zapyataya farther down Gammesh-Chat: the path passes above its bank. Sofia Waterfalls and Aimatly-Dzhagaly Lake require a different direction and are outside this traverse.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
No scheduled service to the mountain beginning is verified. Private travel into the Sofia valley is commonly arranged from Arkhyz; agree on the exact drop-off near the Glacier Farm approaches. Collection is needed where Gammesh-Chat reaches the Sofia farther down the valley. Your driver must know both places because this version does not return to its starting area.
By car
The mountain walk starts in the Glacier Farm approach area and ends beside the Sofia below Gammesh-Chat. Check the valley road and access to your intended drop-off; ordinary-car access to the beginning is unverified. Meet your vehicle at the lower ending. Any additional valley walk back to a parked car needs separate planning.
Parking
Authorised parking arrangements for this traverse are unverified. Before travelling, ask where you may leave a vehicle and how to reach it from the lower finish. A prearranged transfer with different drop-off and collection points can simplify the day.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Irkiz and Kyolaush have steep rocky sections, and snow can change their demands in summer. The Gammesh-Chat descent needs attention on loose stones, wet rock and earth, especially around the slabs. Check river crossings before setting out. Do not continue over a pass in a storm or poor visibility just to complete the itinerary; make turnaround decisions before entering the difficult upper terrain.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 55 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow a full mountain day with a very early beginning. Divide it between climbing to Irkiz, pausing at Great Sofia Lake, crossing Kyolaush to Sapozhok and the substantial descent. Shorten lake stops if behind your agreed plan. Arrange the lower-valley collection with allowance for slow progress across rock and river sections.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
A first traverse is best planned for settled summer weather after hazardous snow has cleared from both passes. Summer reports show that snow can remain on approaches, so the calendar alone is insufficient. Autumn adds shorter daylight and ice. Winter conditions change the outing’s requirements considerably.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain footwear with a grippy sole
Poles for the long rocky descent
Water and substantial food supplies
Waterproof and warm layers, gloves and sun protection
A map of both passes and the descent valley
Charged phone, power bank and torch
Personal first-aid kit and means of contacting your companion
A rubbish bag
