Route description

From Vinstra, the cycling journey leaves Gudbrandsdalslågen and heads into Valdres’ mountain country. Jotunheimvegen offers the space of a gravel road where summer-farm houses and grazing herds remain part of the living landscape. The ascent on Slettefjellvegen changes the mood: open slopes require effort and descents demand attention to brakes and stone. The southern section takes in Golsfjellet road loops before returning towards Høyme’s surroundings. This is an expanded multiday Mjølkevegen version with branches and repeated passages. Choose overnight stops and distribute effort beforehand; the scenic roads are best enjoyed without rushing to someone else’s programme.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - With caution By bike - Yes With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Patchy This cycling version suits prepared participants; narrow or muddy sections may require dismounting. The complete outing and mountain climbs are not recommended as a children’s trip. Keep a dog leashed and away from livestock; agree arrangements at overnight stops. Reception is intermittent on Jotunheimvegen and Slettefjellet. Departure from the rural finishing side requires separate organisation.

Nearby

The usual Mjølkevegen continues to Gol’s railway side, while this version finishes in Høyme’s rural surroundings. Family cycling loops on Stølsvidda are shorter separate outings. The Sputrefossen approach and Jotunheimen summits are not included as visited objectives in this version; visits require separate time.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Visit Valdres describes beginning a cycling journey from Vinstra railway station and a local bus towards Skåbu and Ruten; verify bicycle carriage beforehand. The station is in the approach town, while this version begins separately from the platform. Direct public transport from the final Høyme surroundings is unconfirmed. Agree a transfer after cycling and reserve bicycle space on subsequent services.
By car
Arrange road arrival in Vinstra, then compare your selected drop-off with the cycling start. Mountain and summer-farm roads have their own driving arrangements and do not automatically allow free vehicle accompaniment because of a cycling name. The finish lies on another rural side, so plan vehicle return beforehand. Establish seasons, barriers and charges for individual mountain roads.
Parking
Parking immediately at the selected start and finish is unconfirmed. Arrange lawful long-stay parking in Vinstra or with your accommodation for the multiday journey. Do not leave a vehicle at pasture gates, junctions or private-home approaches without permission.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceCompacted dirt 55%, Asphalt 18%, Dirt / grass 5%, Unknown 17%.
Риски Mountain climbs and spare energy for the southern branches create the principal demands. Road 51 near Beitostølen can carry busy traffic; remain attentive to vehicles. Rain and snowmelt can soften gravel, and descents need reliable brakes. Pass grazing animals calmly and close gates behind you. Check Visit Valdres’ current conditions page:2026 road and bridge works alter some passages and signs.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 d 4 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A day-by-day plan is not established for this multiday journey. A standard Vinstra–Gol programme cannot cover the extra southern loops and returns. Confirm nights and food first, then distribute touring days according to fitness, weather and charging opportunities. Allow for dismounting, bike repairs and an independently arranged departure after finishing.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Visit Valdres links the full mountain Mjølkevegen’s availability to Slettefjellvegen opening, usually around mid-June, and the first autumn snow. Some accommodation and food services become limited from September. Confirm roads, nights and the forecast separately for October cycling. Earlier access to lower southern sections does not establish the whole mountain version’s availability.
