Route description

From Leirvik on Stord, the large journey first turns towards the water before connecting western road valleys with high Sognefjellet. Necessary marine and ferry crossings interrupt the cycling rhythm. Solvorn–Ornes offers a view of Lustrafjord from the water before climbing towards the mountains again. Fantesteinen pass marks a striking change: green shores fall behind and severe rocky space opens ahead. Beyond the high road, the journey continues through inland Norway, takes northern branches and reaches Folldal’s surroundings. This independent multiday version of National Route 6 needs prior agreement on nights, water crossings and daily effort.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - Yes With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The journey suits prepared cycle tourists ready for climbs, road traffic and water transfers. Water sections use vessels after establishing bicycle carriage. The complete version is not recommended with young children. Dog arrangements and continuous reception are unconfirmed; a stroller does not suit the complete outing.

Nearby

Bergen and Røros’ historic centre appear in the general national-network description, but this version does not establish visits to them. Urnes Stave Church lies above Ornes quay and requires a separate ascent and access check. Summit paths near Sognefjellet and Stord’s museum interiors belong to independently planned stops.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Skyss publishes passenger service 2080 through Leirvik, Ranavik and Sunde; the reviewed timetable is valid from 10 August 2026. It supports the marine beginning and arrival at Leirvik, while bicycle carriage and the specific stop require separate agreement. Later crossings include Vangsnes–Hella and Solvorn–Ornes. The latter uses its winter timetable from 1 October and some sailings are on request. Direct departure with a bicycle from the selected Folldal-side finish is unconfirmed.
By car
Arrange road arrival in Leirvik on Stord, then approach the marine starting side. A car does not replace this version’s water crossings. The distant finishing side is near Folldal: agree return to Stord separately, for example through a confirmed transfer. Account for seasonal closures on Sognefjellsvegen; an open coastal road does not establish an open high-mountain passage throughout.
Parking
Parking at the specific Leirvik quay-side start and selected finish is unconfirmed. Agree lawful long-stay parking with local accommodation or a parking operator beforehand. Quay spaces may be needed for boarding and service vehicles; road arrival alone does not establish permission to leave a car for the whole journey.

What to expect

Places
Leirvik passenger quay The marine starting side on Stord, where the journey turns towards islands and coastal roads.
Solvorn to Ornes ferry crossing The Lustrafjord water crossing that changes the cycling journey’s familiar road rhythm.
Fantesteinen Pass The high road point on Sognefjellet where shoreline scenery gives way to exposed rocky mountain country.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 636 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 66%, Improved surface 8%, Gravel 3%, Unknown 21%.
Риски Sognefjellet has demanding climbs and a steep descent on the Fortun side; a loaded bike needs reliable brakes. Ordinary roads carry vehicles, and tunnels require separate checks for cycling permission and lighting. The national roads administration notes that public transport bypasses some sections where cycling is prohibited. Do not try to bypass a closed mountain road across an unprepared hillside. Ferries and northern branches need spare time, food and energy.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 3 d 4 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A day-by-day plan is not established for this multiday journey. Plan road days, necessary water crossings, the high passage and northern returns before Folldal separately. Agree the number of nights after checking accommodation and every vessel. A short crossing time excludes waiting and boarding; published national-route programmes with different endpoints cannot replace your complete plan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The full version needs an open Sognefjellet season and acceptable conditions on high roads. The roads administration describes winter mountain closure and possible night or weather restrictions even after reopening. Solvorn–Ornes operates year-round, but its winter timetable does not establish a winter cycling journey throughout. Confirm snow, daylight, accommodation and every water service separately for autumn.

Helmet, front and rear lights and visible clothing.
