Route description

Buførevegen is an old cattle-driving passage across the mountains to summer grazing grounds. This version begins on the Botnen side of the mountain section and reaches the stone steps of Reiseterlia. Pause early to appreciate the masonry: the steps sit carefully within the steep hillside. Higher up, the surroundings become more severe and cairns provide the main guidance. Snow patches on the open crossing change after every winter. The eastern steps bring back the feel of a constructed path and reveal the Sørfjord side. Parts are retraced here, so the journey needs a considered finish and spare energy as well as an interest in the stairways.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Poor The mountain start requires an additional approach from the Botsvatn road side. Repeated passages, snow slopes and limited reception make the complete version unsuitable as an ordinary children’s outing. Walk the steps and high ground. Establish dog arrangements with a local guide.

Nearby

Jonstein stands beside the western Buførevegen section, but its summit is not confirmed as an objective in this version. Botsvatn’s shore belongs to the additional road approach, and Reiseter to the descent beyond the finish. Folgefonna glacier outings and visiting Agatunet require separate plans.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to the mountain start near Botnen is unconfirmed. Reaching Jondal only resolves the lower part of the journey; arrange the final road section and walking approach separately. The finish lies on the Reiseterlia steps, so descending to road transport on the Reiseter side adds to the outing.
By car
The national park describes the road from Jondal towards Folgefonna and a gravel-road turn towards Botsvatn; the mountain road has a toll. Walk from the road side to the start near the summer-farm area. The eastern road approach runs from road 550 through Reiseter, but this version finishes above the village parking. Agree the remaining descent and vehicle return beforehand.
Parking
The park describes roadside parking at Botsvatn at the owner’s responsibility. It serves the road approach rather than the mountain start itself. Reiseter has published parking where vehicles must not obstruct farm work; it lies below this version’s finish. Establish permission for a longer stay separately.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 851 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Visibility and following the cairns matter on the high crossing. Snow slopes including Brattefonn may be difficult after snowy winters. Wet stone and fatigue complicate the stepped descents. The tourism authority advises a local guide beyond the first cairn at Reisetereggjet; this version traverses the high section, so arrange accompaniment. Winter brings serious avalanche danger on the hillsides.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 11 h 5 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A day-by-day plan is not established for this multiday journey. The tourism authority’s 3-hour estimate describes one ascent from Reiseter to the upper cairn and does not cover the whole journey. Agree walking days, nights, snow-slope allowance and the extra descent from the finishing steps to the road with a guide.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The park gives July–October for the high passage, while the tourism authority lists June–September for the eastern ascent. Choose according to snow-slope condition and the forecast. An October outing needs separate confirmation from a local guide. A winter walking trip is discouraged because of avalanches.
