Route description

This extensive western Central Alpine Trail combination begins already on the upper Tappenkar side. Early Draugsteintörl and Tofernscharte crossings lead through successive mountain valleys before the direction heads across northern Alpine regions towards the Kitzbühel Alps and Tyrol. Krovenzjoch and the actual Geier summit appear on the Tux side, followed by Stubai crossings continuing west. The combination reaches Montafon near Schruns and Tschagguns, then returns through southern high-mountain regions towards the High Tauern and upper Tofern side. Obere Ödenwinkelscharte makes its later portion a glacier undertaking rather than an ordinary glacier-free branch walk. This is a distinct demanding combination, excluding the full Hainburg-to-Feldkirch journey. Its complete current permitted passage and lodging are unconfirmed; individually check every selected mountain crossing before travelling.

Named passes and Geier Summit provide particular mountain destinations within the western combination. Changing pastoral valleys, Stubai crossings and the Tauern glacier side interest a prepared group willing to establish its own permitted plan first.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The high start and finish need independent approaches, while the western portions require their own multi-day plan. The complete version includes a glacier crossing and requires a prepared mountain group with relevant experience. An ordinary children’s outing, bicycle and stroller are unsuitable. Dog rules and continuous reception across every region are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Feldkirch and the national route’s eastern Hainburg portion are excluded from this western combination. Großglockner and Großvenediger summits require independent mountaineering ascents; crossing a nearby glacier saddle does not include them. Tappenkarsee circuits and particular hut interiors are also planned separately.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
A verified current public transport arrangement directly to the high start and from the high finish is unavailable. Arrange lower Tappenkar-side arrival, an independent approach and the Tofern-side exit separately. National-route Hainburg arrival and Feldkirch departure information does not apply to this version.
By car
Verified vehicle access directly to the high start and finish is unestablished. Choose a permitted lower side for the independent approach and vehicle storage. This extensive combination crosses different mountain valleys; an individual working road does not establish complete vehicle passage.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree lower-valley vehicle storage in advance for the independently planned multi-day undertaking and return. Places beside high crossings or mountain buildings are unestablished.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 76834 м.
SurfaceDirt 11%, Asphalt 11%, Gravel 8%, Unknown 60%.
Риски Avoid transferring the 02A branch’s glacier-free character to this entire version: Obere Ödenwinkelscharte requires glacier experience, equipment and a current crevasse, snow and rock assessment. The complete current permitted passage is unestablished, so agree each crossing beforehand with its maintaining organization. Lizum-Walchen military rules apply independently on the Tux side. An old lodging list does not establish availability: since September 2026 Oberwalder Hut’s winter room has an Alpine Club lock, requiring advance access/key arrangements.

How much time to allow

Time for the route | Unestablished With stops | Unestablished Complete duration of a multi-day undertaking on this particular western combination is not established. National-route and separate standard western allowances do not apply to its sequence and repeated portions. First define permitted crossings, approaches, safe exits, confirmed nights and resupply independently. A day-by-day plan is not established.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
One calendar window for the complete combination is unconfirmed. Pastoral and woodland sides need passable ground, high saddles require snow/rock checks, and the glacier portion needs an independent mountain-group assessment. One valley or hut’s summer opening does not establish readiness elsewhere. Check recent maintaining-organization notices before travelling.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain footwear, wind/rain protection, warm layers and equipment for agreed overnight stays.
Water and food under independently confirmed resupply arrangements.
Glacier and protection equipment assessed by an experienced leader, communication, headlamps, first aid and emergency gear; a map of each crossing and permitted exit.
