Route description

The cycling route from Interlaken to Meiringen connects Gsteig Church, Grindelwald’s streets and Grosse Scheidegg Pass. Beyond the village, a historic Wetterhorn cable car cabin stands beside the ascent, followed by the mountain setting between Grindelwald and Rosenlaui. After the pass, the ride becomes a long descent into the Rosenlaui valley and Haslital. Near the Meiringen finish, pause beside the bronze Sherlock Holmes figure. This version includes urban branches and return sections, so it needs its own plan rather than the timing of the direct stage.

Nearby

A walk inside Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge needs separate admission, time and a ticket; riding through the valley does not include it. Reichenbach Falls and the Sherlock Holmes Museum also require additional visits. Grindelwald Museum’s exhibition has its own opening schedule. Select extra stops beforehand to avoid postponing the mountain descent until darkness.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrive by train at Interlaken West and arrange the separate urban connection to the start. Plan the return from Meiringen using the current rail timetable, checking bicycle rules and capacity beforehand. From 19 October 2026, replacement buses are announced for eight weeks between Interlaken West and Ost; bicycle carriage on them cannot be assumed. Mountain buses through Rosenlaui have a separate season and likewise do not guarantee a bicycle place.
By car
End the vehicle journey in Interlaken and arrange the return from Meiringen beforehand. The pass road is not an unrestricted vehicle support route: private motor traffic around Grosse Scheidegg requires permits, while cycling is provided for. Choose a vehicle meeting point on an accessible valley road.
Parking
A specific parking place for the full expanded stage is not confirmed. Choose authorised parking in Interlaken before travelling and check its tariff and maximum duration. Short urban parking near the departure should not automatically be used for a complete mountain day.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 3198 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 60%, Dirt 6%, Gravel 1%, Unknown 33%.
Риски The sustained pass ascent demands fitness, suitable gearing and energy reserves. Buses use the narrow road, and the descent requires sound brakes and confident handling. Natural surfaces and older approaches need comparison with current signs and restrictions. Use permitted urban connections and wheel the bicycle on walking sections where allowed. Include every branch in the plan beforehand.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 9 h 30 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Time for the complete ride with return sections is not established. It is a substantial mountain-day programme for a prepared participant, but assess the selected version against your own pace and current conditions. Start early, rest before the pass and preserve a descent margin. Any overnight or bicycle transfer for a split ride must be booked separately; the usual stage timing does not cover additional returns.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a snow-free pass and settled weather without strong wind, thunderstorms or ice. A warm valley can coincide with unsafe snow conditions above. Check local road notices and mountain transport dates before riding. In autumn, preserve enough daylight for the descent.
