Route description

From central Zermatt, the route passes the facade of Hotel Monte Rosa and the Church of St Mauritius before heading towards Zmuttbach and Furggbach. Valley surroundings gradually give way to rocky high mountains, and the upper passage enters the Theodul Glacier. The Matterhorn and the historic Alpine connection between Switzerland and Italy give this ascent its character. The selected version includes returns over ground already covered and finishes in the glaciated area south of the pass. Agree the full outing, acceptable glacier passage and onward completion with a mountain guide beforehand.

Nearby

Gandegg Hut, Theodul Pass and the hut beside the pass require separate approaches; the selected endpoint guarantees neither a visit nor an overnight at them. Zum See and Blatten can be explored separately from the main ascent. A cable car may help alter the mountain plan, but operating dates, final departures and the approach to a station require separate confirmation.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Reach Zermatt by train via Visp or Brig; from Täsch, continue on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. The urban departure is reached on foot from the station. No automatic return service is established at the glaciated endpoint. Agree the descent, continuation or approach to an operating mountain connection with your guide before leaving.
By car
Drive to Täsch and continue to Zermatt by train. Ordinary private vehicle entry into Zermatt is restricted. The upper endpoint is in glacier terrain and cannot serve as a vehicle meeting place. Completion requires a mountain plan arranged beforehand.
Parking
Use the parking offering at Täsch station for arrival in Zermatt. Check availability and permitted duration before booking. Your return to the vehicle must include the separately agreed mountain descent or onward journey.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceDirt 35%, Paving stones 3%, Gravel 1%, Unknown 59%.
Риски The upper passage becomes an Alpine outing over snow and ice, with onward direction sometimes difficult to identify. The Tour Monte Rosa organiser requires rope protection or a mountain guide on the glacier section. Old descriptions cannot establish present crevasse or snow conditions. Repeated ascents and returns add effort, and an endpoint away from a hut needs a safe onward plan. Cancel the upper outing when conditions are unsuitable.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 11 h 1 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Time for the complete expanded outing is not established. The usual first Tour Monte Rosa stage is shorter and does not cover all these return sections. Discuss the visiting order, turnaround time and completion point with your guide, then arrange a day plan or separately agreed overnight. Arrival at a hut or the final cable car cannot be assumed.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose the season and day according to current glacier conditions, weather and the required mountain transport. A summer route name does not establish safe snow or crevasse conditions. Early snow, poor visibility and strong wind can require changing or cancelling the upper passage on the guide’s advice.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Footwear and glacier equipment required by your guide
Rope and protection equipment for the agreed group
Warm layer, wind and rain protection
Sunglasses and sun protection
Water and food for the complete agreed outing
