Route description

From Meiringen, this long mountain passage rises towards Reichenbach Falls, where the fictional memory of Holmes and Moriarty accompanies the first steep bends. Higher up, Rosenlaui’s valley world begins: a historic hotel, alpine meadows and river reveal the Bernese Oberland before its large resort squares. Beyond Rosenlaui, the way ascends to Grosse Scheidegg and crosses to the Grindelwald side. Descending, inspect the displayed Wetterhorn lift cabin, then the local museum’s exterior near the town ending. This version revisits some already walked sections, requiring more energy and time than the ordinary pass crossing. It is a substantial day for a prepared walker: valley, pass and town history work best with an agreed complete plan. Arrange gorge, museum and hotel visits separately.

Rail serves both town sides, but the complete mountain passage is very long. It is unsuitable for an ordinary family walk, bicycle or stroller. Dog rules and continuous reception are unknown; Rosenlaui’s owner reports limited reception at the hotel.

Nearby

The paid Rosenlaui gorge interior requires a separate ticket, time and seasonal check. Grindelwald Museum’s collection is an extra visit beyond the outside passage. Glacier approaches, Wetterhorn summits and Via Alpina beyond Grindelwald need independent mountain plans.

Without a car
Meiringen Railway Station provides lower arrival; approach the start separately. The ending lies in Grindelwald, where Jungfraubahnen lists trains through Zweilütschinen to Interlaken Ost. Seasonal line 128 connects the valley side with Grosse Scheidegg; check any separate bus exit and service independently. Its 2026 summer operation is listed until 18 October.
By car
Leave a vehicle at a permitted Meiringen town location, then return from Grindelwald by an agreed transport connection. Vehicle passage throughout the walking portions or delivery to mountain bends is unconfirmed.
Parking
The municipality identifies managed Alpbach tourist parking. Check maximum duration and the current tariff for this longer outing: municipal rules were under revision in 2026, so older rates cannot automatically be treated as current. Add the Grindelwald-to-car return separately.

Hotel Rosenlaui ends its 2026 season on 18 October: restaurant service is reduced on 17 October, and 18 October breakfast is only for staying guests before restaurant closure.
