Route description

The Millwood circle begins at Grizedale’s forest centre beside the timber figure of the Ancient Forester. From Grizedale Beck, the path enters the trees and climbs the slope above the departure area. Nigel Ross’s sculptural bench appears beside the upper forest passage before the walk returns to the familiar bridge area. The appeal lies in discovering how artworks sit within a living woodland. This circle includes an ascent and steps; the shorter streamside walk has different access conditions.

Nearby

Go Ape, play areas, the café and other forest activities require separate arrangements. The Boat Race, Stone Hedgehog and further sculptures need their own approaches; the entire forest collection is beyond this circle. For a stroller, select the officially marked short lower version instead of the upper ascent. Carron Crag and Grizedale Tarn belong to other outings.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to Grizedale is unconfirmed: the national park authority currently identifies the nearest regular arrival at Hawkshead. Organise the onward forest-centre approach independently. Check your specific service and arrange a return transfer ahead. The walk’s short length does not reduce the approach from the village.
By car
Follow Grizedale signs from Hawkshead or approach from the south through the Satterthwaite area. Official coach access differs from the passenger-car approach, with a separate southern route for large vehicles. The departure is beside the forest centre. Follow road signs and any forestry-work restrictions.
Parking
Grizedale Main Car Park is paid, with payment after the visit. Current charges are £2.90 for the first hour, then £0.70 for each additional fifteen minutes, with a £14 daily maximum. Keep dogs under control and follow local instructions. Stay outside forestry-work barriers. Fires, barbecues and unauthorised overnight stays in the forest are prohibited.

How much time to allow

Сезонность и рекомендации
The walk has interest in different seasons when the forest and paths are open. Spring and summer offer shade, while autumn changes the leaf colours. Use grippy footwear after rain. Strong wind and severe weather can cause temporary forest closures; check the centre calendar and paths separately.
