Route description

From Wray Castle, the walk enters the countryside on Windermere’s western side. Castle towers give way to pasture, stone walls and field gates, with Blelham Tarn opening beyond them. Here the lake is viewed from surrounding paths while respecting the working farmland. Streams and a stone clapper bridge lead back towards the estate, where Windermere’s shore offers a broader, more open water landscape. This version includes additional passages over familiar ground, so allow unhurried stops and take care at rural junctions. Its departure and finish occupy different places within the estate area. Wray Castle can currently be admired from outside: the interior is closed for restoration while the grounds continue to welcome visitors.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
See two contrasting lake settings together: quiet Blelham Tarn among farmland and the open expanse of Windermere beside the estate. The castle, old walls and stone bridge give the outing its character. Choose it for a day combining Lake District scenery with a historic estate without a major mountain climb.

Nearby

St Margaret’s Church and further estate walks can be added by separate permitted approaches. The outdoor Potter family photography exhibition is advertised until March 2027; ask staff where panels are currently accessible. Latterbarrow, Calf Parrock and Watbarrow Point belong to other branches. Stay outside marked private residences and avoid informal farm passages down to Blelham Tarn.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Bus 505 stops nearby; National Trust describes a separate walk to the castle of roughly twenty minutes. Windermere railway station requires onward transport. The seasonal Green Cruise links Ambleside Waterhead, Wray and Brockhole; its published 2026 season ends on 1 November. Select a specific sailing and check the final return departure ahead.
By car
Approach Wray Castle on the B5286 from Hawkshead or Clappersgate. Local roads are narrow and unsuitable for large tourist coaches. The castle provides no campervan or minibus parking. Follow estate signs and current restoration-work restrictions.
Parking
Wray Estate Car Park charges £7 for two hours, £8.50 for four hours or £10 for the day at current rates. Pay with cash at the machine or through JustPark, code 80715. National Trust members obtain a parking ticket using their membership card. Allow for the countryside branches and the separate return from the finish to your vehicle.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 190 м.
SurfaceFine gravel 37%, Compacted dirt 27%, Asphalt 18%.
Риски Countryside passages include step-stiles, narrow gates, wet grass and uneven ground. Low areas can become very muddy in rain. Watch for traffic on short road sections. Dogs need a lead in the estate and near livestock; supervise children beside water and stiles. Accessible estate paths do not make this whole version suitable for a stroller or bicycle.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 39 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow an estimated 3–4 hours with stops for the expanded outing, and longer in wet conditions. Add the park, café and separate exhibitions as desired. Check the connection from the finish to your car park or pier; when returning by boat, fit the walk to your selected timetable. Do not plan on visiting the castle’s interior rooms.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a daylight outing when countryside paths are accessible. Spring and summer favour lake stops, while autumn colours the park and woodland passages. Prolonged rain makes field paths harder; winter calls for a dry weather window and daylight in reserve. Boat access follows a seasonal timetable.
