Route description

The Comb Gill woodland passages reveal Whinlatter through its smaller watercourses. Starting inside the forest, the outing descends to lower paths and revisits familiar branches. Black Gill offers a place to pause beside the water; higher up, Comb Gill accompanies the way through the trees. The interest here lies in looking closely at the wooded slope rather than expecting a major mountain summit. This version repeats some passages, so a familiar junction may appear again. Obtain the current layout at the forest centre before leaving: forestry operations now require a small diversion at the official trail’s beginning. Follow orange waymarks on open sections and respect barriers when the former direction is unavailable.

The official Comb Beck description mentions an old sheepfold and a disused dam; ask staff where they can be seen on today’s open walk. The visitor centre and café require their own approach from the departure. Gruffalo, Go Ape, Seat How, Lord’s Seat and Barf belong to separate activities or paths, with their own restrictions during forestry work.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 212 м.
SurfaceGravel 28%, Unknown 72%.
Риски Paths can be narrow, steep and uneven; rain makes roots and soil slippery. This version is unsuitable for a stroller. Be considerate at crossings, watch for bicycles and stay off dedicated mountain-bike descents. Supervise children near water and keep dogs controlled. The current beginning diversion and forestry-work barriers must be followed.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 h 29 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow an estimated 1.5–2 hours for all repeated woodland passages and brief stops. Add the separate approach from your car park or bus stop and the return to them. Check the current diversion at the centre before setting out. In rain or during restrictions, avoid relying on the time given for the shorter standard official circle.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a dry daylight weather window with the selected forest paths open. Spring and summer offer tree cover, while autumn brings foliage and flowing water after rain. Postpone in ice or strong wind. Check forestry operations and the bus season independently of the time of year.
