Route description

This Glen Nevis circle reveals Ben Nevis from two sides. The ascent begins at the bridge beside the youth hostel and climbs the western slope; a separate branch heads towards Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe before returning to the junction and continuing towards the summit area. The stone Peace Memorial stands here. Beyond it, the outing changes character: the exposed Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête, its rocky ribs and two summits on the northern continuation lie ahead. This is an expanded variant with return branches. After descending on the northern side, it climbs the Allt a’ Mhuilinn glen again before reaching the western path and the Glen Nevis bridge. It appeals to experienced groups seeking both the summit plateau and the massif’s northern side. Preparation also requires checking a former upper branch of the western ascent, which is outside the current main path. Choose the outing only after reconciling a safe passage with the estate manager’s current guidance.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Experience Ben Nevis beyond an ascent and descent on a single slope. The summit memorial, exposed arête and northern glen make a substantial mountain day, while the succession of Càrn Mòr Dearg and Càrn Dearg Meadhonach gives the circle its distinctive shape. It offers most to groups comfortable on exposed rocky ridges and with sufficient energy for a further ascent.

Nearby

Glen Nevis Youth Hostel opens all year; book accommodation in advance, with current check-in listed from 16:00 to 22:00. Its drying room can be useful after a mountain day, but accommodation is separate from the outing. Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe lies near a western branch; a specific shoreline visit is unconfirmed. Do not assume CIC Hut is reached or available for overnight use. Steall Gorge and its waterfall belong to a separate Glen Nevis outing.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
High Life Highland lists a limited summer Shiel Buses N41 service towards the lower visitor centre. Check journeys for your date beforehand; a year-round bus directly to the starting bridge is unconfirmed. An independent approach from Fort William along Glen Nevis Road is possible: a pavement on its east side reaches the visitor centre, after which the separate connection towards the hostel needs planning. Add the approach and return to the long mountain outing.
By car
From Fort William, follow Glen Nevis Road to your chosen permitted lower arrival point. The circle begins at the bridge beside Glen Nevis Youth Hostel, whose address is PH33 6SY. If leaving your vehicle at the visitor centre, PH33 6ST, plan a separate walk to the departure. Vehicles do not reach the upper mountain sections.
Parking
Ben Nevis Visitor Centre parking costs £8 per day according to the current owner’s page; places are first come and fill early. The car park is separate from the starting bridge, so allow for the walking connection both ways. The hostel’s limited parking belongs to its guest facilities; general public free parking for this outing is unconfirmed there.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceGravel 33%, Dirt / grass 19%, Dirt 1%, Unknown 48%.
Риски The most demanding sections are the exposed arête, rock blocks, descent from the northern summits and subsequent ascent. Mist complicates plateau navigation; wind and wet rock alter ridge conditions. The upper western section includes a former path branch whose present maintained access is unconfirmed. Before departure, establish its status and how to follow the safe main path; avoid erosion shortcuts across the restored zigzags and fragile slopes. Snow requires independent winter competence throughout the group.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 11 h 32 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow a full mountain day with an early departure and a substantial daylight margin. A reliable single duration for this expanded circle is not established: ordinary Ben Nevis ascent times exclude the ridge and additional northern ascent. Prepare a section-by-section plan, set a turnaround time and check your escape options beforehand. Arrange evening arrival and transport without relying on services remaining open after a long return.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose long daylight, dry rock, light wind and a snow-free arête. A forecast for the mountain massif is necessary even in the warmer season. Late autumn leaves much less daylight; winter suits only a group with appropriate experience, equipment and assessment of snow conditions. Reconsider deteriorating conditions before entering the ridge.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Grippy mountain footwear
Map, compass and navigation skills
Waterproof clothing and warm layers
Spare gloves
Food and water for the entire expanded circle
A headtorch for every participant
Charged phone and emergency insulation
Winter equipment and experience using it in snow conditions
