Route description

From Skjeggedal, the path climbs into rocky high-mountain country and reaches Trolltunga. Around Hestaflåene, place names recall former horse grazing before the journey draws increasingly towards the plateau edge. Ringedalsvatnet lies far below: that depth gives the celebrated rock ledge its striking character. Approach the finish without rushing, keeping attention on wet rock and narrow sections. This outing describes reaching the ledge; add the return to Skjeggedal separately to your day. After the walk, the photograph becomes one experience among others, alongside mountain quiet and the great space beneath your feet.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - With caution By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The passage and necessary return require fitness and mountain experience. The summer shuttle has completed its published 2026 season; arrange an October transfer separately. A dog must stay leashed and cope with rock and cold; keep it close near cliffs. Bikes and strollers do not suit the full walking outing. Continuous reception is unconfirmed.

Nearby

Ringedalsvatnet’s shore lies below the plateau and is not part of a confirmed waterside walk here. Trolltunga’s via ferrata is a separate technical option. The hydropower museum in Tyssedal and Folgefonna glacier outings can be planned independently after resting; this walking objective does not establish visits to them.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
The operator published summer shuttles from Odda to P 2 Skjeggedal and from there to P 3 Mågelitopp, but both 2026 seasons ended on 27 September. On the 12 October review date, they cannot be promised as operating services. Arrange a separate transfer or taxi after checking road availability; reaching Odda does not automatically resolve the mountain approach.
By car
From Rv 13, turn through Tyssedal towards P 2 Skjeggedal. The operator reports restored road access after rockslide-protection works, with daytime traffic control and a night closure; verify the current arrangement before travelling. Walking through the construction area is prohibited. P 3 Mågelitopp serves a different, higher start and operated seasonally in 2026.
Parking
Use official paid P 2 for the Skjeggedal-side start; check its current charge and road toll separately with the operator. P 1 lies lower in Tyssedal and P 3 higher with its own seasonal arrangement. P 1 and P 2 are published as year-round facilities, which does not establish a safe winter path. Do not assume October P 3 parking under summer rules.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1225 м.
SurfaceDirt 83%, Improved surface 1%, Unknown 16%.
Риски Steep rocky ascents, an uneven plateau and fatigue on the return require continuing attention. The operator advises cancelling in strong wind, heavy rain or fog. Use bridges even above dry riverbeds and stay on the established path. Keep a safe distance from Trolltunga and neighbouring cliff edges; a photo queue must not encourage risk. Outside summer, go with a local guide.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 5 h 11 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The operator estimates 8–12 hours for the complete P 2 Skjeggedal–Trolltunga outing and return. This includes the return that follows the ledge arrival described here. Start early and allow for the photo queue, pauses and a careful descent. Do not transfer the shorter P 3 estimate to a Skjeggedal start; agree October timing with a guide.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The operator gives 1 June–30 September for independent experienced hikers. A guide is recommended from October through May. On 12 October 2026, the operator reports mountain snow and the end of the ranger season on 11 October; summer buses finished earlier. A specific outing depends on the forecast, snow and road availability.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain boots, poles and waterproof layers.
Warm clothing, hat, gloves and a torch.
Water and sufficient food for the outing and return.
Map, first aid and spare power.
Snow equipment as advised by the guide; dog leash and waste bags.
