Route description

Big Almaty Lake and Left Talgar reveal two contrasting sides of the mountains above Almaty. At the lake, water within a rocky basin holds your attention; in Left Talgar, it is the depth of the valley and the journey between mountain stopping places. This Grand Almaty Traverse variant connects them through Tourists Pass and uses Small Talgar and Talgar passes on the northern side. Tourists Pass forms a meaningful boundary between neighbouring valleys. Krasnaya Meadow is a recognisable landmark on the Talgar side, before the journey gradually returns towards the northern approaches above Almaty. The attraction is seeing the range as connected mountain country: lake, high watershed and long valley become one expedition. Choose the northern exit beforehand with your leader and transport arrangements, as several mountain approaches lie nearby. Overnight trekking experience, checked snow and ice conditions and careful logistics are essential.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No data With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The lake start and high northern endpoint need different approaches. Suitability of the complete journey for children, dogs and cycling is unconfirmed. Mountain passes are unsuitable for strollers. Discuss communication and emergency exits with the leader beforehand.

Nearby

Shymbulak and Medeu are separate transport and sightseeing bases requiring a verified exit. Butakovka Waterfall has not been established on this line and is excluded from its stops. Check overnight arrangements with mountain-hut operators; a mapped building is not a reservation.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrange the lake approach and the exit from the upper northern valleys separately. Shymbulak’s cableway serves ordinary traverse programmes from the Talgar Pass side, but this variant does not end at a station. A nearby cableway does not settle the return journey. Verify current operation and agree a specific collection point after leaving the mountains.
By car
Discuss initial access through Big Almaty Gorge under current restrictions on the lake road. The northern endpoint is above city roads and needs a separate walking exit before collection lower in a valley. Vehicle transport does not connect mountain walking sections. A local guide should verify all transitions before transfers are booked.
Parking
Do not leave a car beside the lake approach expecting the northern exit to return you to it. A shared car park serving both sides has not been established. Arrange permitted long-stay parking on the accessible road or transfers with different drop-off and collection points; retrieving a car is a separate journey.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 2158 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The firsthand traverse description associates the Tourists Pass approach with snow, ice and glacier terrain. Before departure, the leader checks snow and ice conditions, crossings and overnight stops. The northern section uses different pass approaches: choose the exit and an alternative descent before setting off. Nearby sections on a map do not justify leaving verified paths for a direct shortcut.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 17 h 3 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Plan | A multi-day trek with stages agreed in advance An organiser offers the usual Grand Almaty Traverse as four days from Shymbulak to Big Almaty Lake. The direction, start and northern endpoint differ here, so four days is not an established duration. Build the complete schedule and overnight plan with a leader after checking connections; add the high approaches, road exit and weather reserve.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The local traverse organiser recommends July–September, noting more snow and rain in June. For this variant, that summer window depends on confirmed conditions at Tourists Pass, glacier sections and rivers. Autumn cold and early snow may complicate the crossing before September ends.
