Route description

At Big Almaty Lake, the mountains first reveal themselves through water: the pale lake basin gathers the rocky slopes around it. The Alma-Alagir circuit takes you beyond the familiar lakeside perspective to the high saddles connecting Ozernoye and Prokhodnoye gorges. It begins beside the road above the lake; arrange the journey from Almaty and the approach to that high start separately. At Zhosalykezen the landscape gains an unexpected detail: the Cosmic-Ray Station, where scientists study particles arriving from space. Beyond it, the mountains take over again. Almatinsky Alagir Pass leads back towards Ozernoye Gorge, and the familiar lake becomes an orientation point once more. The interest is in understanding where the lake sits among neighbouring valleys. Mountain camping experience, sound navigation and a weather reserve are essential; the working research station is not a visitor hut.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No data With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The high start requires arranged access or a substantial walking approach. Suitability of the complete circuit for children, dogs and cycling has not been established. The passes and mountain paths are unsuitable for strollers. Reception beside the road does not establish coverage in the next gorge.

Nearby

Scotland Lake and Alyoshkin Bridge appear in other Prokhodnoye trekking descriptions, but their inclusion in this circuit has not been established. Do not add them automatically as stops. Entry to the Cosmic-Ray Station buildings requires a separate arrangement with the scientific organisation.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
City transport can help reach the lower Big Almaty Gorge approach, followed by a separate ascent to the road above the lake. No verified regular service reaches this circuit’s start. Arrange a transfer or include the full walking approach in the programme, and decide how to return to Almaty after the descent.
By car
Access comes through Big Almaty Gorge. Before travelling, ask the national park about current restrictions on the road towards the lake and station, the permitted drop-off and the return meeting. A paved road does not guarantee private-vehicle access to the high start. Almatinsky Alagir Pass is crossed on foot.
Parking
A designated car park serving this circuit has not been confirmed. Agree a permitted place on the accessible road; do not treat the scientific station’s grounds as a public car park without permission. For a transfer, specify the meeting point and time with allowance for weather delays.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1422 м.
SurfaceDirt 71%, Improved surface 9%, Unknown 21%.
Риски Almatinsky Alagir joins the high parts of two gorges. The trek organiser describes grassy slopes, moraines and scree; mist and snow change route finding. Obtain current information about streams and any crossings. Buildings at Zhosalykezen do not guarantee shelter. Respect the protected water-supply role of Big Almaty Lake and do not approach the water where access is restricted.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 10 h 30 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Treat the circuit as a mountain journey with agreed overnight stops and a weather reserve. An organiser offers two- and three-day Alma-Alagir traverses, but they use different approaches and do not establish an exact duration for this circuit. Add travel from Almaty and the high-start approach separately; describing the whole programme as a normal lake walk would be misleading.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The Alma-Alagir trek organiser lists a June-to-October summer and autumn window. For an independent circuit, choose passes actually free of hazardous snow and settled weather; both ends of that window particularly need local confirmation. Early snow can affect the high section well before Almaty turns cold.

What to bring

Trekking boots and poles
Windproof and waterproof clothing
Warm layer, hat and gloves
Food reserve and water treatment
