Route description

From the Kaskelen side, this outing crosses side valleys towards the upper Southern Cossack valley. Roads and woodland gradually give way to open pasture, with rocky mountain ground increasingly noticeable near the ending. That change of valleys and sustained climbing is part of the appeal of western Trans-Ili Alatau: the lake feels different when reached through a long transition of scenery. The approach ends close to Upper Cossack Lake’s northwestern side. Pause for the water and surrounding mountain basin while preserving energy for the return. This original approaches one lake; a second lake, nearby passes and summits are outside its confirmed visits. Before travelling, check current Kaskelen admission with the national park and prepare an independent descent or permitted overnight plan.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The long ascent requires stamina and independent mountain experience; prepare the return and any overnight plan beforehand. Children without mountain preparation should skip it. Public arrival at the beginning, dog rules and reception are unconfirmed. A bicycle or stroller is unsuitable for the complete rocky ascent.

Nearby

Interlake, Pogranichnik and other nearby passes require separate mountain routes. A second Cossack lake is outside the confirmed Upper Lake approach. Uitas Rock and the limestone quarry are independent lower stops and should not be assumed visited from an overall programme title.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1575 м.
SurfaceDirt 85%, Unknown 15%.
Риски The sustained ascent and full descent require spare energy, clear weather and confident path choices. Rain, fog and snow change open mountain ground. The park website publishes a temporary Kaskelen closure for mudflow risk; confirm whether the restriction still applies and whether admission is permitted before travel. Preserve vegetation and rocks, and camp only where authorized.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 6 h 30 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Time for the route | Unestablished With stops | Unestablished This one-way version has no confirmed complete schedule. Plan a substantial mountain outing with an independent return. If staying overnight, choose a permitted location and exit plan beforehand; a published two-day tour with an extra summit is a different itinerary.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a settled summer mountain window, usually July–September, after checking snow and permitted access. Early-season snow and autumn frost remain possible. An open lower gorge does not establish safe conditions for the upper climb.
