Route description

Kaskabas reveals an unexpected side of the mountains above Almaty. Neighbouring gorges open from its summit, and the onward route connects exposed passes with a narrow stream valley. This variant begins on the mountain itself. Arrange the ascent separately: the journey from the road to this starting point is a mountain outing in its own right. From Kaskabas the path turns towards the pass of the same name and Volchiy Pass, then descends through Kaskabas Gorge towards Prokhodnoye. Along the ridge the surrounding mountains hold your attention; lower down, it shifts to the winding trail, grass and running water. The appeal lies in that changing scale, from summit space to the enclosed valley and the eventual return to the lower road. It suits walkers confident with mountain navigation and a properly arranged approach to the high start.

Without a car
First decide how to reach Kaskabas summit and where to leave the mountains beside the Prokhodnoye road. Older firsthand guides mention a city bus near GES-2, but verify the current service, stop and last return before travelling. A bus does not reach the summit start. A prearranged meeting below the gorge can simplify the group’s return.
By car
On the lower side, the road in Big Almaty Gorge near the turn for GES-2 and Prokhodnoye provides an exit reference. It is not road access to Kaskabas summit. If ascending from another side, arrange a transfer or movement between vehicles separately. Check road conditions and national-park restrictions with the land manager.
Parking
A dedicated car park serving the whole traverse has not been established. Agree a place in the lower gorge with a local host or the administration, without blocking the mountain road. The summit start and road finish have different access conditions, and the ascent may use a different approach.
