Route description

The crossing between Chon-Kyzyl-Suu and Jeti Oguz brings together two very different mountain valleys. On the western side, the hot springs at Djily-Suu make a memorable pause before the climb towards Shatyly and Echo Pass. The eastern side leads through upper Chatyrtor into Jeti Oguz and the Kok-Zhaiyk pastures. Warm water in the valley, a cold pass basin and the return to green meadows give this journey its distinctive rhythm. Echo was named for the sound reflected by the pass slope on the Chatyrtor Glacier side. In quiet weather, it is a detail worth remembering: the mountains become something to listen to as well as to see. The crossing nevertheless needs mountain experience, with scree and snow or ice terrain. Historical accounts do not establish present conditions. The full journey links the two valleys; side trips in the high basin require a separate decision with the leader.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Road approaches lie below the mountain crossing. Arrange arrival on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and discuss access through Chon-Kyzyl-Suu and return through Jeti Oguz with your host. No verified regular service has been found serving both ends of this particular journey. Agree the meeting place and date before setting out.
By car
Check the approach towards Djily-Suu on the western side and the Jeti Oguz valley road on the eastern side. Vehicles serve the valley approaches; the group crosses Echo on foot. Agree drop-off and collection points with the drivers and prepare for a road stopping short of the intended meeting place.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1681 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The first-hand Echo account describes a stonefall-prone slope with broken rock and scree gullies; the Chatyrtor approach enters a glacial basin. The western side requires a careful descent through Shatyly. Check snow, ice and river crossings before departure. A neighbouring summit or another pass needs its own technical plan. Obtain recent Echo conditions and agree a return deadline before departure. Leave exposed slopes in a thunderstorm, avoid walking below other people in scree gullies and let the leader assess doubtful snow bridges. Arrange access to the springs locally; do not assume medical benefits or that mapped buildings guarantee operating accommodation.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 21 h 30 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Plan a multi-day crossing with valley camps and weather reserve. The historical MSU itinerary includes separate climbs and exploration, so its duration does not define this programme. Your leader should allocate stages according to the pass conditions and actual drop-off point. Allow separately for travel through both gorges.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The usual Terskey mountain window is July, August and early September; the first-hand group crossed Echo in late July. Check snow and ice in the pass basin, river levels and thunderstorm forecasts before choosing dates. Outside summer, winter conditions and technical equipment require a separate assessment.
