Route description

Mountains open out differently on the Arabel Syrt than in the Issyk-Kul gorges. Valleys widen, lakes sit in exposed high country and the cold wind hints at nearby glaciers. The path travels west across the plateau to Arabel Pass, then descends into the Burkhan basin. At the pass the change is particularly clear: the plateau’s broad horizon gives way to a valley running between mountain ranges. The lake near the pass is a reason to pause before descending. An impressive summit is unnecessary here; water, grassland and rocky slopes at the plateau edge create the memorable scene. Beyond it, the Burkhan River becomes the journey’s guide towards the lower valley. This crossing rewards an unhurried, self-supported trek with camps, weather reserve and the eventual exit planned in advance.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
No verified regular service has been found reaching this Arabel start. Discuss arrival on the syrt and departure from Burkhan with a local organiser. The finish lies within a river valley and needs onward walking or agreed vehicle collection; arrange this before the final day.
By car
Historical reports describe mountain-road access to the plateau from Issyk-Kul and a rough link over Arabel Pass. These accounts do not confirm present conditions. Check access, restrictions, fords and vehicle choice with a local driver, and arrange collection in Burkhan separately.
Parking
A reliable long-term vehicle storage location on the syrt or at the lower finish has not been established. Arrange storage with a host at your chosen base, together with outward transfer and collection.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 142 м.
SurfaceGravel 26%, Dirt / grass 1%, Compacted dirt 1%, Unknown 72%.
Риски Rocky road sections occur near the pass and on the descent; historical cycling reports describe washouts, mud and difficult climbs. Lakeside ground can be marshy. Weather changes quickly on the exposed plateau, and acclimatisation is needed. Check Burkhan crossings and do not treat an old vehicle road as proof of continuous road access.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 15 h 38 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A preliminary walking allowance is several days, roughly 3–4, with reserve for weather and crossings. This is an editorial plan for a self-supported group, not a published duration for this exact variant. Cycling times do not define walking stages. Add transfer to the syrt and the complete onward exit from Burkhan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose settled summer conditions after checking Arabel snow and roads. First-hand parties travelled here in July and August, reporting snow, cold and frost even in summer. Early and late season need recent local information; winter requires a separate plan.
