Route description

The approach to Ala-Kul begins among the spruces of Karakol Gorge and becomes rockier as it climbs. Beside the lake, water and enclosing slopes create a world removed from town. The pass then leads into Keldike, followed by the descent to Altyn-Arashan. Hot springs add a gentler final chapter when a visit and overnight stay have been arranged. The crossing introduces both sides of Ala-Kul while leaving room to enjoy the shore as well as cross the pass.

Route at a glance

Give Ala-Kul enough time to become the central experience of the walk. Wooded Karakol, the rocky lakeshore and Altyn-Arashan’s springs make a satisfying journey without adding distant summits.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Poor This high crossing requires mountain experience, cold-weather camping and an independent retreat plan. Arrange a ride in Karakol if travelling without a car; there is no confirmed service linking the mountain trailheads. Dog and bicycle access is unverified. Do not depend on reception for help.

Nearby

Ak-Suu lies farther down the Arashan exit and requires an additional descent. Telety and Jeti-Oguz lie across Karakol Valley and can only be added as a separate multi-day section.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrange transport from Karakol to the walking approach in Karakol Gorge. Decide before departure whether to walk onward towards Ak-Suu or arrange a local vehicle on the Arashan side. No scheduled service linking these mountain points has been confirmed.
By car
Start with a ride into Karakol Gorge. Agree pickup on the Arashan side with a specific driver and waiting point. Do not judge the upper Altyn-Arashan road by what a city car can manage; that ride requires a separate conditions check.
Parking
Agree longer-term car storage in Karakol. Permitted overnight parking in the upper valleys has not been confirmed. Set the return-to-car plan before beginning a through walk.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 2260 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The rocky lake approach and scree pass require secure footing; snow changes the normal summer conditions. Avoid leaving the Keldike descent until darkness. Check the opening of accommodation and springs separately: hot water in the valley does not replace readiness for cold weather above.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 3–4 days
With stops | 4–5 days Plan overnight stops in Karakol Valley, around the lake crossing and in Altyn-Arashan according to weather and the group. The onward exit to Ak-Suu is a separate finishing stage; add its walking and transport time.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Plan a summer outing once the pass is clear enough for your group, with a weather margin. Early autumn needs a fresh conditions check and mountain experience. Snow and frost call for a revised equipment plan.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain footwear, poles and rain protection help on the lake approach and pass.
Confirm accommodation or carry a tent, warm sleeping bag and mat.
Food, water treatment, a headlamp and an offline map should allow for a delay in the mountains.
