Route description

This collection introduces different valley sides of Kabardino-Balkaria and needs an individual plan for each part. The first follows the Kestanty road, descends to the Baksan and approaches Bylym. Examine the mountain river from the safe permitted side of its road crossing. The second begins near Tyrnyauz, follows the Baksan valley uphill, turns into Adyl-Su near Elbrus village and returns along this side valley. Shkhelda’s outside approach introduces the history of mountaineering camps in the Caucasus. The third belongs to Nalchik: it leaves the city resort side for the upper valley, the 3rd Settlement area and Khara stream. These directions are not established as one continuous walking outing. Choose a part and a safe method of travel before setting off.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1783 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Vehicles use the valley roads; do not choose a carriageway as a walking path without a safe permitted passage. Check stones, water and required border documents in upper Adyl-Su. Avoid shortcuts over unfamiliar riverbanks on the valley return. The upper Nalchik portion also needs separate road and exit assessment; inter-valley connections are unestablished.

How much time to allow

Time for the route | Unestablished With stops | Unestablished Complete time for a multi-day visit covering all separate parts is not established. Roads, valley returns and transfers require an independent allowance for the chosen method of travel. A Dzhantugan-based lake walk does not time the lengthy Tyrnyauz approach. A day-by-day plan is not established.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose the season for each valley separately. Snow-free surfaces and settled weather suit the walking portions; rain can worsen dirt roads, crossings and side roads. Upper Adyl-Su needs current snow and access checks even when Nalchik is warm.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Grippy footwear and clothing for the chosen valley.
Water, food, rain protection and a headlamp with a reserve for the agreed return.
