Route description

One outing reveals two sides of the Tsey valley: the sound of Shagatsikomdon Waterfall comes first, followed by a woodland approach towards Rekom Sanctuary. Beside the falling water, stone, spray and the narrow ravine hold your attention; near the sanctuary, the atmosphere becomes quieter and more reflective. Rekom remains an active place of Ossetian religious tradition. Its wooden building and forest clearing require respectful observation from a distance: visitors do not cross the fence, and only men approach the male sanctuary. Women should stop before the relevant restriction signs. The outing rewards careful attention to Tsey’s nature and culture, provided you obtain reserve permission beforehand and establish which approaches are allowed.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - With caution With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data With children choose the permitted waterfall section and clarify the sanctuary approach boundary in advance. The complete variation to the male Rekom sanctuary is not accessible to everyone: women stop before the restriction signs. Pets are prohibited on the official reserve section. Steep rocky approaches make the complete outing unsuitable for a bicycle or stroller. Regular service to the beginning and continuous reception have not been confirmed.

Nearby

Tsey Glacier needs a separate longer outing and permission for its official trail. Book accommodation in the valley independently, checking arrival arrangements and the walking approach. Treat Rekom as an active sanctuary: an interior visit or participation in ceremonies is not included in a sightseeing walk.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Regular transport directly to the walking beginning has not been established. Arrange delivery to the Tsey valley and a separate return after the outing. Ask reserve staff about the waterfall entrance and permission point; the alpine-camp approach to Rekom is a separate reference, not an assured match to the entire outing.
By car
Arrange a lawful drop-off location in the Tsey valley and collection after the walk. Continue on foot. Do not drive along woodland paths towards the waterfall or sacred clearing, and keep staff access clear.
Parking
Dedicated parking for this combined outing has not been confirmed. Ask local staff about a lawful vehicle space and conditions before walking; do not treat the sacred clearing or roadside as unrestricted parking.

What to expect

Places
Lower Shagatsikomdon Waterfall The lower cascade reached by the official reserve trail. View its stone channel and falling water from the permitted observation area.
Upper Shagatsikomdon Waterfall The named upper cascade lies beside this outing’s waterfall section. Its presence does not authorise climbing arbitrarily through the wet channel.
Rekom Sanctuary The wooden Ossetian sanctuary was restored after a fire. Observe it from a distance, respecting the fence and restrictions at the male sanctuary.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 293 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Permission is required for the reserve section. The waterfall approach has steep sections and exposed granite; after rain stay on the designated passage and away from edges or turbulent water. Follow Rekom’s rules regardless of whether the path is open: only men approach the male sanctuary, and visitors do not cross its fence. Neither the waterfall nor the sanctuary is a fire or picnic site.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 h 48 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow 3–4 hours for the outing, including the waterfall section and an unhurried pause at the permitted Rekom boundary. Add the actual drop-off approach and transport return separately. The published 20–25 minuteestimate from the alpine camp applies only to the usual sanctuary approach, not the complete walk including the waterfall. Add time for wet stones or a slower pace.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The reserve lists April–November for the waterfall trail, but check its actual seasonal opening before travelling. In 2026 opening was announced on 18 June; the previous winter closure does not establish routine winter access. Choose a dry day without fog or heavy rain. Religious events take place at Rekom in June: establish whether a tourist approach is appropriate and follow local arrangements.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Footwear with grip for wet stone.
A warm layer and rain protection for changing weather.
Drinking water and a small snack away from sacred grounds.

Personal first-aid supplies and understated clothing for a cultural place.
