Route description

In the Tsey valley, the glacier’s history can be read before the ice comes into view. The path follows a terrace beside the Tseydon, between pines and smooth-faced stones. Farther on the woodland opens onto moraine ground, revealing traces of ice moving through the valley and retreating. Beside Tsey Glacier, pause and listen to the river: its cold water connects the wooded beginning with the austere mountain surroundings. This is an educational outing in the North Ossetia Nature Reserve, where small natural details matter as much as the final view. Read the information boards along the way and stay in the permitted viewing area at the glacier; proximity does not establish safe access to its cave or surface.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - With caution With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data Arrange delivery or a separate approach to the beginning beforehand; regular service directly to the entrance has not been established. With children assess the complete outward and return walk and keep to viewing boundaries. The official route passport prohibits pets and does not provide for alternative modes of travel. Rocky ground and moraine make a stroller unsuitable. A verified reception map is unavailable.

Nearby

Shagatsikomdon Waterfall is another official route in the Tsey area; plan it separately and check admission. Rekom introduces Ossetian religious tradition but has its own sanctuary-access rules. Do not add these places automatically when the day’s reserve is already limited.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
A current regular-service timetable directly to the trail entrance has not been confirmed. Arrange delivery to the beginning in the Tsey valley and collection after returning. Ask the reserve where to obtain permission and which entrance group starts the walk; an arbitrary departure from a nearby village does not replace that approach.
By car
Confirm the final vehicle drop-off location with the trail entrance staff. Continue on foot along the permitted path: driving into the valley does not authorise vehicle travel along the reserve trail. Check mountain-road conditions after heavy rain.
Parking
A separate confirmed free parking facility at the beginning has not been established. Ask staff about a lawful space, current signs and safe vehicle retrieval before leaving the car; keep the entrance passage clear.

What to expect

Places
Tsey Glacier The glacier tongue completes the valley’s natural story. View it from the permitted area, keeping its cave and ice surface outside the outing.
Tseydon River The glacier-fed river accompanies the valley section, its sound linking woodland with the open moraine.
Kozanosk Stream A named stop in the reserve’s route description, where the wooded path meets several branches of the mountain stream.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Obtain permission and receive the required briefing before leaving. Stay on the permitted trail and away from cliff edges. Choose footholds carefully on the moraine, particularly after rain; return along the known path in fog or worsening weather. The glacier cave, ice surface and turbulent riverbed are not an extension of the sightseeing walk. Fires, collecting natural specimens and bringing pets are prohibited.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 h 45 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow 5–6 hours for the complete outward and return outing with stops, the reserve’s published excursion estimate. This variation reaches the viewing area, so include the walk back to the beginning in your daylight plan. Start early enough and agree collection time with your driver. Add time for wet ground or a slower pace.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The reserve’s route page lists May–November, but actual opening and weather take priority over the calendar. In 2026 the operator announced opening on 18 June. Check operational restrictions before an autumn outing; winter closures apply, and an older suggestion that favourable weather permits a walk does not replace current permission. A dry day with good visibility is preferable for moraine and river sections.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Footwear with grip for stones and wet ground.
A warm layer and wind protection for the colder glacier surroundings.
Rain protection, a hat and sun protection.
Drinking water and food for the complete outing.
Permission, a phone with a map and personal first-aid supplies.
