Route description

Blue Lake lies in the Turya mountains, in a rocky basin on the northern side of the Aibga–Agepsta ridge. At its shore, the shape of the landscape reveals the work of an ancient glacier: water fills an excavated hollow held back by a rock step. The mountain-valley approach lets the lake appear gradually after the wooded part of the walk. Pause beside the water to study the surrounding slopes and preserve the quiet of this remote Caucasus setting. Agree permitted access and a complete return before setting out: the national park explicitly prohibits tent overnight stays at Blue Lake.

Route at a glance

The attraction is a high mountain lake in a natural glacial basin, without resort viewing platforms around its shore. Water and rock give Blue Lake a distinct setting for quiet observation. Visit only with an agreed, lawful day plan; a lakeside tent camp is not an authorised part of the experience.

Route suitability

Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The starting point is already in a mountain valley and needs a prepared approach. This is not a family walk from a transport stop. Hunting dog breeds are expressly prohibited; the national park asks visitors to leave other pets at home too. We do not recommend bikes or strollers for this mountain outing. Reliable mobile coverage is unconfirmed.

Nearby

The Kardyvach lakes belong to a separate reserve itinerary with its own permits and authorised overnight sites. They are not an automatic continuation of this Blue Lake approach. Turya Road from Nakhazo also requires separate admission and confirmation of reopening from the resort.

Getting there

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gain
The wooded approach and climb into the mountain basin require confident walking on uneven ground. Rain and fog increase the time needed and make navigation harder. Do not treat an unplanned lakeside tent night as a normal fallback: the park explicitly warns against such camps. Before departure, verify the functional zone, authorised line, snow conditions and a feasible same-day return.

How much time to allow

Allow roughly four to six hours one way for the represented approach, including stops. This is an editorial planning reserve for mountain walking, not an operator’s published duration. Returning and reaching the starting point require additional time. Do not plan an overnight stay at Blue Lake. If the complete authorised outing cannot fit into daylight, choose another permitted direction instead of turning it into a tent trek.

Best time to go

Choose a snow-free period after confirming path conditions, permission and sufficient daylight. Snow may remain in the mountain basin even in summer. Autumn cold, rain and shorter days limit independent outings. Restrictions published specifically for the 2025 fire season do not establish a closure in 2026; obtain the current decision from the park.

What to bring

Grippy hiking footwear and walking poles.
Warm clothing, waterproof jacket and wind protection.
Water and food for the complete agreed outing.
