Route description

Vottovaara’s northern circuit starts on the upper side of the mountain approach and first passes Ukko’s Head and the edge of the Natural Amphitheatre. It then reaches a western lookout, circles the northern plateau and returns on the eastern side via the Stone Gates and Stairway to the Sky. Enclosed forest passages, rocky platforms and open views above the taiga alternate during the walk. The circuit ends at its upper starting point; prepare the external ascent and final descent separately. The administration publishes this northern route among its permitted options. Obtain a permit and confirm current access before travelling.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - With caution With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For walkers prepared for a rocky mountain circuit and separate approaches. Children need experience of extended walking and attentive supervision beside ledges. Confirm animal rules with the administration.

Nearby

Vottovaara’s exact summit and the Stone Well are near the southern section, but separate approaches are outside this circuit. The Split Boulder in the Lake, Death Mountain and other places require checking a separate permitted path. Stone names and numbers do not establish ancient rituals; here their interest comes primarily from the real forms of a northern rocky landscape.

View from the Seid lookout A named rocky lookout on the western rise towards the northern section. Pause for the view while remaining clear of the edge.
Pyramid lookout A lookout near the northern turn, providing another viewing platform before the eastern branch.
Stone Gates A named stone formation beside the northeastern section. Observe it from the permitted approach and leave the stones in place.
Stairway to the Sky A stepped rock formation beside the eastern branch. Observing it from the path does not involve climbing towards the drop.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Wet stones, roots and changes between forest and open platforms require steady footing. Fog makes the western and eastern branches easy to confuse; stay on the agreed route rather than searching for other boulders. Take care at lookout edges and beside Stairway to the Sky. Preserve energy for the external descent after finishing the circuit.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 34 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A full day including separate approaches. The complete outing duration is unknown. Establish the ascent to the upper start first, then distribute stops at the Amphitheatre, western lookout, northern turn and eastern formations. An agreed road exit still follows the return to the starting place.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Dry, snow-free weather makes rocky passages easier. Start early in autumn and account for wet ground; fog and strong winds reduce the value of open views. Confirm any winter circuit and its external approaches separately with the park.
